@BrndnStrssng I really wish I had had a stick for the hipster family that was chortling in the most obnoxious and self-congratulatory manner when I saw Megalopolis.
@MarkdeSilva1 After reading CC, I realized he was much more adept at tweeting about the book than actually writing it. Also, the fact he ditched this platform so soon after publication called into question his sincerity as one of the X literati.
@suzania Never a participant but definitely know of it. When I first moved to NYC, someone asked me if I was into SCA, and he was very confused when I started enthusing about Desmond Dekker and The Specials.
Favorite first watches of June:
The Magnificent Ambersons (Welles 1942)
Il mistero di Oberwald (Antonioni 1980)
Les Sieges de l’Alcazar (Moullet 1989)
The Mayfair Set (Curtis 1999)
Peter Thiel needs to worry less about PLTR and go enroll in VBS. (NB: While I agree with Douthat that Thiel’s theology is confused, I don’t like his dig at Thunberg.)
I shouldn’t be surprised given Murray Kempton’s interest in various demimondes, but I found it pleasantly jarring to see him quote Lester Bangs approvingly in a story about Sid Vicious’s bail hearing (taken from the new collection “Going Around”).
@matthewdmarsden@tedcruz As a native Texan, I have to ask what are you going on about? Ted Cruz has been a senator since 2016. Texas hasn’t had a Democratic governor or a Democratic U.S. senator in this century.
Favorite first watches in April:
The Testament of Dr. Mabuse (Lang, 1933)
The Rain People (Coppola, 1969)
The Theater of the Matters (Biette, 1977)
Seven Intellectuals in a Bamboo Forest: Part Five (Yang, 2007)
@Productive_Mkts@oren_cass@FrankLuntz Given the current gig economy, I think this type of employment is the future, not the well paying jobs featuring good benefits and job security of the earlier era. As I said, though, I haven’t worked in the sector for a while and could be wrong.
@Productive_Mkts@oren_cass@FrankLuntz While I agree that a factory can in theory provide good jobs for all skill levels, that wasn’t my experience. The low paying jobs I had paid little better than fast food work. To be fair, all of my factory work was a long time ago, so I could be wrong about the situation today.
@Productive_Mkts@oren_cass@FrankLuntz I asked the question because 1) I’m genuinely curious, and 2) “factory job” is a vague phrase. I worked a high paying factory job (on the line at IBM) and some low paying ones (plastics, peanut butter), and I think many people assume they’re all the former.
