@gruxamengus My most cited paper is actually about appropriation but I can’t exactly write in my trash book “if you hate what I say here, I’ve got something else for you to read.”https://t.co/mfPlPyKPLP
One thing I learned this week is not to read too much sociology of taste, or else every time you sit down to watch a movie you’ll worry “uh oh, what would a sociologist of taste think about me watching this.”
@gruxamengus Any move that you can come up with to justify any aspect of your interest in anything from less respectable areas of culture has definitely been called “bourgeois self-fashioning through extractive appropriation.” I guarantee it.
@davo_arid I actually met them and went on their tour bus. They were opening for KoRn and gave me a copy of their demo tape. Memorably, they were very nice guys. I bought that first album the day it came out.

RIP to the great George Eastman (aka Luigi Montefiori). Since the first time I saw him in a movie, my policy has been that I’ll watch ANYTHING he’s in, which has led me to some strange and wonderful places.
@daniel_fidler It looks like lots of people are getting hyped on the negative reviews of this one. Definitely how it goes with Refn: if a Cannes audience liked it, that would be cause for concern.
Oh, it’s on. The Cannes curve of a masterpiece. It’s also promising that reviews complain of slowness, incomprehensibility, and “style over substance.”

Wrote about Claire Denis start to finish: AD years with Rivette and Wenders/Dommartin, 1971-87; her first films and earliest friendships with Descas, de Bankolé, and, behind the scenes, Bernard-Marie Koltès, who died of AIDS in 1990; what her final films may look like. Link below
