When I moved into my house I found small dirty footprints on walls and poopy underwear hidden behind the toilet tank and wondered how someone could let their kids do that. Then I had my own and realized parenting is a lot like living with drunk, filthy hobbits.
Happy Sunday #amwriting and #WritingCommunity friends! I’m not sure anyone will see this but I feel like I’m missing something with the magic system in my WIP. Let’s hear your best tips and resources for developing your story’s magic system... pretty please!
My 3yo was born to be a Disney Princess. Not only does she want to be a princess when she grows up, her imaginary friends are named Flower&Lilly and she has a bird & bunny as imaginary pets that guard her and her things from an imaginary pack of raccoons that break into our house
@KateBitters @agletterman I have to agree with you. I have read MANY very diverse fantasy books in recent years. Not to mention the diverse MG fantasy books my daughter has read. I can see the argument the traditional fantasy genre was narrow but see a lot of great changes in recent years.
@agletterman I feel this is changing, esp as the industry attempts to give voice to diverse authors. Tomi Adeyemi, Sabaa Tahir, and Renee Adiehs books come to mind. I also think it can be tricky for a white author to respectfully write fantasy stories from backgrounds that aren’t their own.
Just had my daughter get out their Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls book to read about Ruth Bader Ginsburg after talking about her passing. Afterwards, my 7 y/o looked at me and asked, “Is Ru Paul someone really important too?”
I love my kids.
So now I have to hunt for bugs in the snow to feed my 100+ hungry baby mantises until it’s warm enough to release them or my pamphlet warns, “they may develop an interest in eating each other.” This class pet thing may start to get ugly. #homeschoolfail#mantismassacre Stay tuned
So... I decided to get my kids a “class pet” and now I’m starting to feel like I should have put more thought into this. If you’ve never seen a hatching praying mantis egg, google it. Trying my best not to light this thing on fire.
Also, I am supposed release most of these little guys into the wild and save only a few to observe. Which would make me feel better. Except in snowed in Ohio last night. So if I let them go, I’ll be a #mantismurderer
