Getting social mobility right is complicated - let’s not forget that 30% of the most disadvantaged students at Oxford have come via free places in independent schools https://t.co/OKm8kRVUAL. There needs to be room for everyone,. https://t.co/3bQ9Au2CiF
There's a simple way of helping more disadvantaged children into university without disadvantaging others. ‘If you want more seats at the table, make a bigger table’ by expanding places, @HMCExecDirector Mike Buchanan tells BBC Radio 4’s Today programme. https://t.co/3bQ9Au2CiF
Listen to @HMCExecDirector Mike Buchanan tell BBC Radio 4’s Today programme why universities should expand the numbers of places they offer so no bright student loses out, whatever their background. Listen from 2:45:00 https://t.co/FlbLtzSiJ7

#FairerFutures is a great ambition - which means that able people from all backgrounds should have proper access. Let us never discriminate against any young person because of their parents, whatever their household income
“Not all state-educated students are disadvantaged and the majority of students from affluent backgrounds are not educated in [private] schools. This is why a sophisticated approach is needed for the country genuinely to level up.” https://t.co/Ha2u3iownk
The use of crude measures like school type can hinder disadvantaged students at independent schools from winning deserved places at top universities, warns @HMCExecDirector Mike Buchanan following OfS report. Listen to him on LBC https://t.co/D9FOEjQsZ1 (from 2:28:00).
A massive thank you from me to all the HE leaders and colleagues, school colleagues and others who have made these last years of debate so enriching. I feel immensely lucky to have been part of it all. Nick takes up from here, and I will be found in due course @WhitgiftHead
Greatly looking forward to @HMC_Org@GSAUK universities meeting at @QMUL on Thursday. It will be my last as chair, so look forward to handing this twitter feed on to @IpswichHead
HE graph of the decade?
2012. Controversial first year of £9k fees in England. If hitting poorer students the politics probably untenable. Graph showed a small effect equal by background. The policy survived. Market in places/young entry growth that shaped the decade followed.
@SianGriffiths6 White working class boys are underrepresented in selective universities according to, inter alia, Manchester Uni academics. Would it have been unlawful? Many institutions have closed awards. It might not be moral, but unlawful?
@nickdennis Good point. But it would be interesting to know if the prospective donor had looked at the profile of bursary recipients in the two schools mentioned, and concluded something different was needed.
@nickdennis But many schools and universities have restricted charitable funds eg for students from a certain area. Whilst some are clearly inappropriate, many can be a managed very well, and to the benefit of many who need help
Should universities consider classification by percentage? If the top twenty percent get firsts we would know who the best students are all the time. Just a suggestion.
Our thanks on behalf of @GSAUK@HMC_Org and @WhitgiftSchool1 to all speakers from universities, advisory groups, NGOs and schools, especially terrific current students from @UniofNottingham and @nmite_ac for superb admissions conference yesterday
