@capodice@sam_futrell1 Going to quote @KidadaEWilliams on this one, "Black people are targeted because of what they achieved in freedom. It is not because African Americans weren't doing enough. It was because in the minds of white Southerners, they were doing too much." #sschat
@CHitch94 I learned an immense amount from @KidadaEWilliams and @katemasur about the widespread (and litigious!) activism on the part of Black Americans in this era, can't recommend both of their books enough #sschat
@ShariConditt@serenewilliams I've got a third ep coming out that mentions but by no means digs deep on this -- I've been thinking a supplemental ep might be called for! #sschat
@MapM8ker Mimi Eisen @ZinnEdProject mentioned in our interview that, though this isn't across the board, a lot of what is truly important re: Reconstruction (the Black freedom struggle, etc.) is often literally in the margins of textbooks
@ShariConditt This is a great Q, Shari. For my part, learning (what little I did) about Reconstruction in MA in the early 90s there was more than a whiff of self-congratulatory "well, we were abolitionists," so that's an issue of its own #sschat
@MrW_THS Glad to hear you're finding another way to incorporate it, Ryan! Honestly, prior to making this series I never thought of Reconstruction as our first Civil Rights era.
@MrW_THS@KidadaEWilliams oh YES Ryan, @KidadaEWilliams book is AMAZING. I'm so glad you picked it up and can't wait to hear what your students think of her work!
@classroomtools So glad you're here, Bill! I learned alllll about the Dunning School and its promotion of that Lost Cause notion while reporting out our latest series.
I've been working on a series about Reconstruction, one of the most important under-taught eras in U.S. history, for months and the first ep is finally out. I didn't know how much I didn't know: https://t.co/PtWzXyAhC7
