We synthesised a sulphide-metal bearing porphyritic cosmic spherule from a nearly metal-free CM2 chondrite. The metal beads likely derive from the reduction of FeO in the melt. This experiment leaves a lot of interesting questions to the 2023 list of problems to solve.
Last experiment of the year, this time seriously! Melting a carbonaceous chondrite fragment at 1500 deg under reducing conditions to simulate atmospheric entry of micrometeorites and examine volatile loss.
Students got excited for seeing this video of a vesiculation experiment performed using a hydrothermal moissanite cell, showing (literally) a magma breathing.
Last HP experiment of 2022: a smiley plagioclase undergoing dissolution in a hydrous basaltic melt. Maybe excited to go on holiday??? 🎄💫🌋
