The HS2 trolls come out to claim HS2 is Green. Not one of them has ever come up with a justification for designing a railway for 250mph. It's the major factor why it is so expensive & so destructive. The carbon deficit of its construction & width needed is greater than a motorway
@ElaineCox11 'Only' 570,000 sq.m. Getting of lightly compared to the M1/M6/M42 area logistics operators / developers call the 'Golden Triangle'. DfT/National Highways asleep at the wheel as motorways & junctions are turned into conveyors.
@youngwt@lfg_uk@AaronBastani Cities built & ran trams & buses. It was something they could do & it was vital until cars appeared. No-one seemed to realise that cars would create congestion. That led to sprawl & more traffic. It has destroyed cities unless they have an efficient public transport system.
@lfg_uk@__karl__@AaronBastani We chose to go for sprawl & made local public transport fail because it could not be integrated or integrated with trains. Blame barmy politicians & the CMA.
@jfwduffield HS2 did not have to go in a straight line. It just needs extremely large radius curves because of its pointless design speed. That means it can't work around the topography & other constraints. It destroys them & takes more land. That is very expensive.
@sands659@albiondumsday@tomhfh Should have picked a lower speed & a different route but really it was the wrong project driven by people who didn't know what they were doing & didn't care.
@nigethugrug@albiondumsday@tomhfh Those foundations are going to move. Look at most roads. HS2 thinks they won't & it has spent Β£bns already in the process.
@iainlindley@albiondumsday@tomhfh It would not look the mess it does if a lower speed had been chosen. It could avoid problems & people. It is a ridiculous price to pay for a worse, unconnected railway.
@albiondumsday@tomhfh HS2 said the additional tunnelling was mainly to save cost & risk. It failed to appreciate the problems of the original 'design'. Also claimed reduction in delay. Looking at the rest that looks true.
@NoelDolphin Isn't that the standard? Unfortunately when some road bridges are raised to facilitate electrification they are not even widened to permit even one footway or a standard carriageway.
@Modern_Railways Totally bonkers to allow diesel passenger trains to use an electrified WCML. It's obviously not full. It seems Chris Gibb doesn't know 300 Amps won't propel the trains he likes at speed up a hill or on the flat?
@philatrail ETCS looks ridiculously expensive for what it does. It's not much better than Victorian tech & should be obsolete. It still works in steps & needs a driver to look at something & take the right action.
How can it possibly cost Β£500k to fit something in a 66 & then not work?
@HS2theTruth@TransportActio2 Backhanders and corruption into the pockets of decision making politicians and their supporting advisors must clearly be at play within current UK decision making.
So, doesn't Reeves know that this is the most expensive (and socially divisive) way of going about things; or does she know, but doesn't care?
Either way this should disqualify her, and others with this mind set, from any role in our Government.
@RosieP4 Just Growth, Growth, Growth.
No sign of the travel implications being considered at all. No definition of what is a sustainable locations. No sign of effective public transport or safe & convenient active travel. Just greenfield sprawl.
Only congestion is growing.
