This, from DfT annual report, shows capital spending on roads, rail and HS2.

Spending on HS2 is, year after year, higher than on the whole of the rest of the rail network, and nearly twice total spending on national highways.

Just think what could have been done instead.

@britishstandd The Bat mitigation was not required to be expensive, that was HS2 ltd wasting money. The top reasons for the mess was 1/The rush to start with immature plans. 2/,Cost plus contracts incentivising overspend. 3/An organisation incapable of managing. Blaming mitigation is misleading
