20-Year-Old Grand Rapids Man in Custody Following Child Sexual Abuse Material Investigation
A 20-year-old Grand Rapids man is in custody following an investigation by the Michigan State Police Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force involving suspected Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM).

The investigation began on August 31, 2026, after the Department of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) received an international tip stemming from social media activity. HSI coordinated with the Michigan State Police ICAC Grand Rapids Office, and investigators subsequently identified Austin Hapner during the investigation as the person of interest in the investigation.

The investigation is being conducted as a collaborative effort involving the Michigan State Police Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, Homeland Security Investigations, Grand Rapids Police Department, Grand Valley State University Police Department, Kent County Sheriff's Office, and Ottawa County Sheriff's Office, and Michigan State Police 6th District Special investigations Section.

During the course of the investigation, detectives learned that Hapner had been employed at two area daycare facilities: Gro Childcare Academy in Grand Rapids and the Children’s Enrichment Center on the Grand Valley State University Allendale campus.

Hapner was contacted by investigators on September 1, 2026, and arrested. He was lodged at the Kent County Correctional Facility.

Investigators are working to determine whether there are additional children who may have been impacted or whether there were any concerning interactions involving children who had contact with Hapner.

At this time, Hapner's employment at either daycare facility, by itself, does not indicate that criminal activity occurred at either location. Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances and interactions involving Hapner during his employment at those facilities.

Parents or guardians whose children had contact with Hapner at either daycare facility, as well as anyone who may have information regarding Hapner's interactions with children at other locations, are encouraged to contact investigators.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation involving multiple law enforcement agencies and jurisdictions. Investigators are continuing to review evidence, conduct interviews, and determine the full scope of the investigation.

Due to the sensitive nature of the investigation and the ages of the potential victims, MSP will not be providing any further information at this time.

Investigators are committed to protecting the privacy and well-being of the children and families involved while ensuring a thorough investigation.

U.S. Attorney David Toepfer (L) was in Washington today to participate in a press conference alongside top DOJ leadership to announce a significant case out of our Northern District of Ohio.

The defendants -- Guatemalan nationals who are in the country illegally -- were arrested in Cleveland and charged with fraudulently sponsoring minors who entered the U.S. without legal guardians, also known as unaccompanied alien children (UAC).

Also announced, was a sentencing in a similar case in our District involving another Guatemalan national who fraudulently sponsored a UAC and then sexually assaulted her after she was released into his custody.
