Today, while watching Supreme Court proceedings in the Umar Khalid case online.

Everyone was polite, including the judges and lawyers. They smiled and quipped, posed reasonable questions, and presented rational arguments. However, behind this decorum, innocent men and a woman are still waiting to be freed from jail for more than five years.

While I like civil conduct, I despise how effectively it masks injustice and inequity.

The Good Boy Trap.

I was always a ‘good boy’. At home and in school.

The boy grew into a teenager who stayed away from all bad habits and into a professional that followed the beaten course.

Approval mattered to me. Parents, teachers, elders, bosses- my authorities changed but my confidence came from their appreciation, and that’s how you are controlled!

Society likes people who conform and incentivises you to be a reasonable person. Someone who does not challenge the established order. The unreasonable, the mavericks, and the odd balls challenge these norms, and obviously society doesn’t like that.

Reasonable people reason by analogy. It’s a cognitive process by which when faced with an unknown situation, we find out what worked in a similar situation and based on our experience, find a way forward. Unreasonable people use a frame of thinking in physics called the First Principles thinking. You look at a situation and then go down to the basics as to what really is true and then build up a response from that.

Reasonable people were thinking of how to design faster horse carriage. Henry Ford said he will make an automobile; reasonable people said there are so many horses, carriages, drivers, and horse food. How many pumps will be needed across the world to make these cars work! Ford knew that to keep prices low, he needed to mass produce them and engineered a factory with assembly line-up was not heard of then. Fast forward to recent times, the same argument was used against an unreasonable Elon Musk who threw himself into taking people out of the carbon-electric grid and making humans inhabit Mars!

I fell into the good boy trap of reasoning by analogy and now have been trying to teach myself to reason from First Principles. Reasonable people have a higher probability of living a comfortable life while unreasonable people play a zero-one game. If it works out they, will be called geniuses and if it doesn’t, fools.

George Bernard Shaw the playwright once said, “The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man”.

To all you young people out there, consider this: try and think from First Principles. Only then you may stumble upon an original idea or revolutionary way of thinking.

Look at the stock markets in the US and India. It is very clear, businesses of tomorrow will produce much greater value than traditional ones. I was lucky to get away with my reasoning by analogy but now those that think from First Principles are going to be the heroes of tomorrow.

I had studied Crypto early on, instead, if I had invested, I would be writing this from Bora Bora rather than in a hotel in Ratlam where I have been woken up way past midnight by loud talking in the next room!

All you young people out there: go be unreasonable!

Pakistan defeated India by 12 runs in a thrilling test match.

Pak team took a victory lap, and every single person stood up & clapped.

Harsha Bhogle on commentary said, "I have never seen a stronger statement in favour of sport than this...There has been no jingoism."

This Asia Cup was anything but a strong statement in favour of sport.

In fact, it showed our sport in extremely poor light.

And even the commentators have been reduced to a pale shadow of their own past.

I know it's not fashionable to appreciate Gandhi nowadays, but I often go back to his life and works. And sincerely believe what Einstein said, that in time to come people will scarcely believe that a man such as this walked on the face of this planet.
