⚡️Prandelli is focused on the China-Iran financial squeeze.

That’s real and well articulated. The secondary sanctions threat on Chinese banks processing Iranian payments is a genuine escalation. Iran losing its only real customer while China loses its cheapest oil source is a powerful double bind. The $400M/day revenue bleed is real. Bessent calling China “unreliable” and Trump saying “Xi needs oil. We don’t.” is exactly the leverage play we already described.

But he’s framing this as “the summit just got a lot more complicated.” That’s the wrong read. This doesn’t complicate the deal. It accelerates it.

Every financial escape hatch that closes makes Iran’s position more desperate. Every day the blockade runs, Iran loses $400M in oil revenue. Every Chinese bank that backs away from Iranian transactions cuts another lifeline. The financial blockade on top of the naval blockade on top of the military destruction on top of the economic isolation doesn’t make the deal harder to reach. It makes Iran’s alternative to accepting the deal worse. And when your alternative gets worse, you accept terms you wouldn’t have accepted last week.

The part Prandelli misses is that the China squeeze is also leverage for the Trump-Xi summit next month. Trump is simultaneously cutting off China’s cheapest oil source, threatening secondary sanctions on Chinese banks, and positioning the US Navy at both Hormuz and Malacca.

When Trump sits down with Xi, the energy leverage is overwhelming. “You need oil. We control who gets it. Now let’s talk about trade.”

The deal doesn’t get more complicated. Iran gets more desperate. China gets more squeezed.

And both of them become more likely to accept American terms, not less.

Hormuz on one end. Malacca on the other. Those are the two chokepoints that China’s entire energy supply depends on. The US now has operational control or leverage over both. The blockade controls Hormuz. The Indonesia defense partnership positions American military cooperation at Malacca. 80% of China’s oil imports pass through that 1.7 mile wide strait.

The sequencing again. Venezuela seized, securing Western Hemisphere heavy crude. Iran’s military destroyed, Hormuz taken through blockade. Saudi pipeline bypass activated, redirecting Gulf crude to the Atlantic. 40-nation coalition forming to permanently internationalize Hormuz security. And now Indonesia elevated to Major Defense Cooperation Partnership, positioning the US at the other end of China’s energy lifeline.

Every single move reduces China’s energy independence. Beijing currently has no way to import oil at scale that doesn’t pass through a chokepoint the United States either controls directly or has a military partnership adjacent to. The overland alternatives through Russia and Central Asia exist but carry a fraction of the volume and take years to expand.

This is the real game. Iran was the catalyst but China is the target. The entire energy restructuring that’s happened in the last six weeks gives the United States leverage over Beijing that no tariff, no trade deal, no diplomatic negotiation could achieve on its own. When Trump meets Xi next month, he walks into that room knowing that China’s economy runs on oil that America can turn off.

The Indonesia timing is not coincidental. You don’t elevate a defense partnership with the country that controls Malacca in the same month you blockade Hormuz unless you understand the combined effect on Beijing’s strategic position.

This is also the answer to the question about whether Trump plans five moves ahead or just operates on instinct.

The Malacca piece makes it harder to argue coincidence. Hormuz plus Malacca plus Venezuela plus the Saudi bypass plus the Canada leverage erosion.

Five moves all pointing at the same structural outcome: American control of global energy transit.

At some point the pattern is the evidence.
