Tuesday marks eight years since the passing of former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, who was regarded by so many as a guiding force for good.
Today and every day, we remember him. https://t.co/GW8fas0Boc
As part of our Women’s Month series, we revisit the 20th Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture, delivered in 2022 by Honourable Mia Mottley, the Prime Minister of Barbados.
Her lecture, Social Bonding and Decolonisation in the Context of the Climate Crisis: Perspectives from the Global South, looked at the importance of building stronger social bonds and rethinking systems of knowledge and power as we confront the climate crisis.
As we celebrate women whose ideas, leadership and scholarship continue to shape our collective response to the challenges of our time, we reflect on the importance of solidarity across the Global South in the pursuit of a more just and sustainable future.

This photograph of Nelson Mandela and Fidel Castro, taken in Cuba in 1991, captures a moment of shared history between two leaders whose paths were shaped by a belief in the possibility of a different future.
For Madiba, solidarity was not an abstract idea. It was something forged through relationships, tested through difficult times and remembered long after the struggle had changed shape.
As we mark the centenary of Fidel Castro’s birth, this moment from the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s archive invites us to reflect on the relationships that shaped the liberation struggles, and on the power of solidarity in the pursuit of a more just world.

"The cause of women's emancipation is part of our national struggle against outdated practices and prejudices. It is a struggle that demands equal effort from both men and women alike." – Nelson Mandela
On 9 August 1956, more than 20,000 women from across South Africa marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest the extension of pass laws to women. Their courage, unity and determination became a defining moment in our country's struggle for freedom and laid the foundation for National Women's Day.
Madiba recognised that the struggle for women's emancipation was inseparable from the broader struggle for justice and equality. His words remind us that dismantling discrimination and prejudice is a shared responsibility that calls on women and men to build a society where every person can live with dignity, freedom and equal opportunity.
Happy National Women's Day.

"Freedom cannot be achieved unless the women have been emancipated from all forms of oppression." – Nelson Mandela
As we mark Women's Month, we reflect on Madiba's conviction that the struggle for freedom is inseparable from the struggle for gender equality. A just society cannot be built while women continue to face discrimination, violence and exclusion.

In the spirit of last month's @FIFAWorldCup, we're taking a closer look at a replica of the FIFA World Cup Trophy presented to Nelson Mandela by former FIFA President Sepp Blatter ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
The gift reflects a defining moment in South Africa's democratic journey. The 2010 FIFA World Cup showcased the country's ability to host the world and celebrated the power of sport to unite people across nations and cultures.
The Nelson Mandela Foundation is home to an extensive archive of Nelson Mandela's personal papers, gifts, photographs and artefacts, each offering a unique window into his life, leadership and legacy.

Two women. One massive legacy.
Cesária Évora brought the soul of Cape Verde to the world, while Miriam Makeba made history as the first African woman to win a Grammy.
Which of these icons inspires you the most?
As the sun dipped below the horizon, the work continued.
We caught up with Brian Komen and Raynold Cheruiyot during this evening's training session, quietly putting in the miles and fine-tuning every stride ahead of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
There are no crowds at training. No medals waiting at the finish line. Just commitment, discipline and the relentless pursuit of getting better.
With Kenya's rich legacy in the 1500m, the duo will be hoping to carry that tradition forward and bring the Commonwealth title back home.
One session at a time. One race closer.
