Again, a little game theory. Ignore the top. Look for the anomalies.

Angie Griffin told Congress exactly how rotten this is. At Spring Nationals in San Antonio, a man took her women’s title and five individual crowns at that meet. She filed protests. Officials answered with a grievance for unsportsmanlike conduct and dangled a lifetime ban. After lawyers, months of stress, and a wave of support from other swimmers, she was finally cleared. The process itself was the punishment.

U.S. Masters Swimming still lets males race in the women’s category while world bodies move toward sex-based rules. America should lead on women’s rights, not force champions to hire attorneys just to ask for a fair race. Prioritize women in women’s sports. Anything less is surrender.

I’ve always admired Lee Marvin as an actor, but I admire the man behind the movies even more. Before Hollywood knew his name, he was a U.S. Marine scout sniper in the Pacific during World War II. Seriously wounded by enemy fire at Saipan, he spent about a year recovering and received the Purple Heart. Arlington National Cemetery records his WWII service as a Marine scout sniper and Purple Heart recipient.

His decorations included the Purple Heart, Navy Presidential Unit Citation, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and Combat Action Ribbon.

That may be why he was so believable in military roles. He wasn’t pretending to understand war. He had lived through combat, been wounded, and watched fellow Marines become casualties.

I loved Lee Marvin on screen, but his Marine service is the part of his life I admire most. Long before he became a Hollywood tough guy, he had already proven how tough he was.
