£13.6 million in grants has been offered to 12 food charities across England to redistribute an estimated 19,000 tonnes of food directly from farms to help families and fight food poverty in communities, reports Farmers Guide.

@DefraGovUK today announced that thousands of tonnes of nutritious food that would otherwise go to waste will help families facing food insecurity, thanks to new grants offered to a number of charities, including @CityHarvest_LDN, @Foodincommun and @FareShareUK.
With around 30% of all greenhouse gas emissions come from the food and drink industry, and roughly 30% of food produced not being consumed, by reducing #FoodWaste and using our precious resources more intelligently we can achieve higher standards of living, tackle climate change, protect nature, and reduce inequality.
