Not every trial is a result of sin or an evil past, or even a sign of weak faith. Many Prophets ﷺ and friends of Allāh ﷻ have gone through difficult trials.

We should not demonize our brothers and sisters and point fingers at them when they go through calamities. Especially at a time when they are seeing their loved ones die in front of them and losing everything. We should console them, assist them in any way possible, and make it easier for them to observe patience.

Allāh ﷻ says:

“We will certainly test you all with a certain fear, hunger, and loss of properties, lives, and produce. Give glad tidings to the ones who observe patience.” [2:155]

Ibn Jarīr (d. 301) says about this verse:

“This is Allāh ﷻ informing the followers of His Messenger ﷺ that He will test them and put them in trials, with extremely difficult matters, so it separates those who adhere to the Messenger ﷺ from those who turn their backs [on him].”

He also narrates from Ibn ʿAbbās that he said while explaining this verse:

“Allāh ﷻ has informed the believers [in this verse] that the life before death is an abode of trial, and that He ﷻ will subject them to trials in this abode. He ﷻ has instructed them to observe patience, as well as given them glad tidings [for it]. He ﷻ says, ‘And give glad tidings to the believers!’

Then He ﷻ informs [the believers] that He has subjected His Prophets and other chosen ones to similar trials, for their inner selves to be purified. He ﷻ said, ‘They [the believers] were afflicted with suffering and difficulty, and they were violently shaken…’ [2:214].”

May Allāh ﷻ give our believing brothers and sisters more patience, remove all of their difficulties and grant them the highest ranks in the hereafter.
