1st day of school activity I do every year with level 1. I speak only German to a student and get him to fetch me new water, then we discuss how the student was able to execute the task without knowing any German (cognates, body language, etc.). #TeachGerman @rms_htsd

German is an official language of 6 European countries, a sister of English, Dutch & Swedish, the most widely spoken native language in the EU, a language of science, engineering & technology, a common language in eastern Europe. If you have the chance to learn German, grab it.

Using my school’s green screen and a green screen app on my iPad for level 1 students to create their own weather reports for Germany.

We revived a tradition in German 3 today! For the first time since before the pandemic, German 3 students worked together to cook a batch of a traditional Bavarian dish called Käsespätzle. Guten Appetit!

Getting bloodwork done yesterday, the nurse sees my teacher ID badge.

Nurse: I bet the students call you "Mr. P."
Me: I'm the German teacher so they usually call me "Herr Partenheimer."
Nurse (Seeing that I'm bald): That's so rude!

In the 1960’s, while my dad was learning German, he had to memorize Goethe’s 1782 poem “Erlkönig.” In the 90’s, I had to do the same. Today, after a week of studying Goethe’s life and the poem itself, my AP students had to continue the tradition.

1st place gets either extra credit for the second marking period, or gets to use my parking space for a week in the spring while I ride my bike to school. Second place gets what first place did not choose.

I record each student as they recite the poem, and then show my lower level classes the recordings, and they vote on who they think did the best job bringing the poem to life.
