Embassy of Pakistan Brussels @Pakinbrussels organized Pakistan Festival 2026 at Palais Agora, near the iconic Grand Place, bringing the vibrant colours and cultural richness of Pakistan to the heart of Europe.

The festival highlighted Pakistan’s diverse cultural heritage, traditional cuisine, music, handicrafts, jewellery, attire, and the country’s tourism and trade potential for Belgian and European audiences.

A large number of Belgian and European visitors, along with members of the Pakistani diaspora, attended the festival and warmly appreciated Pakistan’s cultural vibrancy, culinary diversity, artistic traditions, and the hospitality of its people.

A dynamic celebration of Pakistani culture and people‑to‑people engagement, further strengthening the bonds of friendship between Pakistan, Belgium and Europe.

MNA @AmnahBatool7 underscored the importance of youth empowerment, education, skills development, employment, and vital contribution of young Pakistanis to the country’s future trajectory.

Students engaged in a thoughtful exchange on career pathways, contemporary youth challenges, and avenues for expanding opportunities for Pakistan’s young talent.

It was a privilege to address the seminar, “Indus Waters Treaty: An Instrument of Regional Peace and Stability,” where leading experts from Pakistan and abroad discussed one of the defining challenges of our time in South Asia.

I underscored that the Indus Waters Treaty is not merely a water-sharing arrangement but a vital instrument of regional peace, stability, and cooperation.
Shared waters must never be weaponized. They must remain a bridge between nations, guided by cooperation, dialogue, and respect for international law.

Any attempt to deprive Pakistan of its rights under the Treaty would have profound consequences for regional peace and security, undermining the shared interests of nearly two billion people of South Asia.

On the UN Charter Day, Pakistan reaffirms its abiding and unwavering commitment to the purposes and principles of the Charter: sovereign equality, peaceful settlement of disputes, non-use of force, self-determination, human rights and international cooperation.

At a time when the world is riven by conflicts, inequality and a culture of impunity, the Charter remains our strongest compass for peace, justice and a more equitable world, one in which every state has an equal stake.

The Embassy of Pakistan in Brussels @PakinBrussels, in collaboration with CEPS @CEPS_thinktank, organized a seminar titled “Transboundary Water Resources: A Weaponised Global Common” on 18 June 2026.

Key note address was delivered by the Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister of Pakistan, Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar @MIshaqDar50, through a video-recorded message, during which he reaffirmed the importance of treaty-based transboundary water governance, respect for international law, and multilateral cooperation. Recalling the enduring significance of the Indus Waters Treaty, he emphasized that water must never be used as an instrument of coercion and called for enhanced international cooperation on water security.

Addressing the gathering, the Ambassador of Pakistan @rahimhayat in his introductory statement, underscored that transboundary water resources are critical to regional stability, global security, and sustainable development, and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the peaceful resolution of disputes through dialogue and established legal mechanisms.

The seminar brought together Federal Minister, Senator Dr. Musadik Masood Malik @DrMusadikMalik; Policy Officer, Water Europe @H20EU, Ms. Madalena Cepeda; Senior Researcher at Utrecht University and Energy Law In-house Counsel, Ms. Cathy Suykens; international arbitration expert and former counsel for the Government of Pakistan in Indus Waters Treaty matters, Mr. Feisal Hussain Naqvi; Head of Climate Programme, Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS), Isabel Scheckenbach; and Founder of Captiv8 Strategies and Editor of The Pakistan Playbook, Mr. Danish Qayyum @DanQayyum.
The event brought together nearly one hundred European policymakers, researchers, legal experts, academics, and practitioners to exchange views on climate vulnerability, water security, transboundary cooperation, rule-based governance, and the peaceful management of shared water resources.

Second Panel discussion focused on “Transboundary Cooperation, Rule of Law, and Water Weaponisation” and featured Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Senator Dr. Musadik Masood Malik @DrMusadikMalik; Senior Researcher at Utrecht University and KU Leuven, Dr. Cathy Suykens; renowned international arbitration expert and former counsel for the Government of Pakistan in Indus Waters Treaty matters, Mr. Faisal Naqvi; and media and communications expert, Mr. Dan Qayyum @DanQayyum. The discussion examined how shared water resources can become a source of tension when legal obligations are contested or politicised, and how robust institutional and treaty-based frameworks remain essential for preventing escalation.

Dr. Musadik Malik @DrMusadikMalik highlighted recent Indian designs to completely alter the Indus waters system, thereby not only violating its treaty obligations and international law, but also seriously undermining security and stability of the entire South Asian region. He cautioned this sets a dangerous precedent for the world to follow and further underscored Pakistan’s willingness to resolve all outstanding issues through negotiation, under UN auspices and the international rules based order.

Dr. Cathy Suykens highlighted the importance of rule-based water governance, drawing on European experience with transboundary river management, the role of basin-level cooperation, and the need for compliance mechanisms and institutional trust to sustain long-term stability.

Mr. Faisal Naqvi provided legal and arbitration perspectives on transboundary water disputes, emphasizing the centrality of international water law, treaty interpretation, and established dispute-resolution mechanisms, including lessons from the Indus Waters Treaty and comparable international river regimes.

Mr. Dan Qayyum @DanQayyum underlined the significance of strategic communication, public awareness, and narrative management in transboundary disputes, noting that water-related tensions are often amplified by misinformation and require transparent, fact-based engagement to support de-escalation.

The panel reaffirmed that “Transboundary Cooperation, Rule of Law, and Water Weaponisation” requires a strong legal architecture, credible institutional processes, and informed public discourse to ensure that water remains a basis for cooperation rather than conflict.

I am pleased to share a great news that the Government of Iran has agreed to allow 20 more ships under the Pakistani flag to pass through the Strait of Hormuz; two ships will cross the Strait daily.

This is a welcome and constructive gesture by Iran and deserves appreciation. It is a harbinger of peace and will help usher stability in the region.

This positive announcement marks a meaningful step toward peace and will strengthen our collective efforts in that direction.

Dialogue, diplomacy, and such confidence-building measures are the only way forward.

There has been unnecessary speculation in the media regarding peace talks to end ongoing conflict in the Middle East. In reality, US-Iran indirect talks are taking place through messages being relayed by Pakistan. In this context, the United States has shared 15 points, being deliberated upon by Iran.

Brotherly countries of Turkiye and Egypt, among others, are also extending their support to this initiative.

Pakistan remains fully committed to promoting peace and continues to make every effort to ensure stability in the region and beyond.

Dialogue and Diplomacy is the only way forward!
