Ambassador Naghmana Alamgir Hashmi @AmbNaghmanaHash
served as Ambassador of Pakistan to the European Union, Belgium & Luxembourg, from April 2014 to July 2019.

During her tenure in Brussels, Ambassador Hashmi strengthened political and institutional engagement with the European Commission, EEAS and European Parliament, advancing Pakistan’s strategic, political and economic interests and promoting a more substantive Pakistan–EU relationship. Ambassador Hashmi’s sustained efforts were instrumental in signing of the Pak-EU Strategic Engagement Plan in June 2019, which remains the bed-rock of institutional engagements between the two sides.

Ambassador Hashmi laid down the foundations of the implementation of the preferential trade agreement, GSP +, between Pakistan and the EU, playing a pro-active and meaningful role in shaping its future course. The GSP+ preferences since 2014 continue to provide an important opportunity to expand Pakistan’s exports to the EU. Ambassador Hashmi focused strongly on maximising the benefits of this framework.

Ambassador Hashmi laid keen emphasis on expanding cultural and people to people ties between Pakistan and the EU. With her emphasis on cultural diplomacy, the Embassy organized a number of events under her leadership, introducing Pakistani food and music.

Through a distinguished career spanning over 37 years, Ambassador Hashmi served at Pakistan's missions in Paris, Jakarta, Copenhagen and Beijing, as well as Ambassador of Pakistan to Ireland and, subsequently, to China.

Ambassador Hashmi is remembered for her legacy of diplomatic achievements and further strengthening Pakistan-EU partnership.

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif's Message on World Humanitarian Day 19 August 2026.

On World Humanitarian Day, Pakistan joins the international community in reaffirming its commitment to the noble values of humanitarian service, compassion, human dignity and solidarity.

Pakistan also pays tribute to all humanitarian workers, institutions and organizations that dedicate their lives to the higher cause of serving humanity and advancing human welfare.

World Humanitarian Day is observed every year in memory of the 22 humanitarian workers who lost their lives in the bombing of the United Nations compound in Baghdad, Iraq, in 2003. The day honours the sacrifices,the courage and selflessness of humanitarian workers serving in the areas affected by crises and disasters.

It is a matter of great pride for us that Pakistan is among those countries that have consistently demonstrated compassion for humanity at the international level and translated this commitment into meaningful action.

Pakistan’s contribution to United Nations peacekeeping missions has always been significant and commendable. Pakistan has a long and proud tradition of standing in solidarity with and extending support to those in need within the international community. Our nation has demonstrated generosity, steadfastness and compassion through decades of hosting millions of Afghan refugees and providing assistance during humanitarian crises at the regional and global levels. This enduring spirit of humanity, hospitality and mutual support is a true reflection of our national character. At the domestic level, our constitutional values and national traditions likewise embody our humanitarian ethos.

The protection of the rights and dignity of vulnerable and marginalized segments of society remains among the foremost priorities of the Government of Pakistan. Through effective measures, the Government is striving to build an inclusive, equitable and empowered society providing individuals with equal access to opportunities without discrimination on the basis of colour or race.

Over the past year, the Ministry of Human Rights has translated policy commitments into meaningful actions through a network of welfare centres, training institutions and protection facilities.

In this regard, the Ministry of Human Rights is undertaking measures to promote social inclusion of Special persons as well as to ensure their access to essential civic services and facilities. The Government is also taking special measures to promote women’s participation in the social and economic spheres, enabling the full potential of humanity to be harnessed without discrimination on the basis of gender.

At the grassroots level, the protection of vulnerable and marginalized segments of society, promotion of gender equality, protection of children and empowerment of young people are essential steps for advancing human rights, social justice and social welfare.

On this World Humanitarian Day, Pakistan reaffirms its national commitment to remain guided by its constitutional values and to stand firmly for the highest ideals of humanity in times of peace as well as in times of crisis. We will continue to strive to ensure that vulnerable segments of society receive the protection and support they deserve and have opportunities to live with dignity.

Together with the brotherly Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Turkiye, Pakistan will continue to play a constructive role in ensuring the defence of our own countries as well as the entire region.

I would also like to once again commend President Trump for his courageous and decisive leadership, which helped avert a nuclear catastrophe in South Asia and saved millions of lives.

Embassy of Pakistan Brussels celebrated the Independence Day with zeal and zest today with the Pakistani community in Belgium & Luxembourg, cherishing the spirit of freedom, unity and national pride.

Ambassador @rahimhayat hoisted the national flag to the accompaniment of the national anthem. Messages of the President, Prime Minister and DPM/FM were also read out.

Message from the President of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari on 79th Independence Anniversary

On the occasion of the 79th Independence Anniversary of Pakistan, I extend my heartfelt greetings to all Pakistanis at home and abroad.

14 August is a day when we remember the sacrifices that made Pakistan possible. We pay tribute to Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the leaders and workers of the Pakistan Movement and all those who gave up their homes, security and livelihoods in the struggle for a homeland.

But independence is not only a historic achievement. It is also a responsibility that each generation must carry forward. The Pakistan that was created through the democratic will of its people must continue to grow stronger, more secure and more prosperous. Our task is not only to remember what earlier generations achieved, but to add to it through our own work.

The past year has reminded us of the strength of the Pakistani nation. The events surrounding Marka-e-Haq demonstrated that Pakistan seeks peace, but also possesses the resolve and capacity to defend its sovereignty and national interests. The lesson of strength is ultimately a lesson of responsibility. A country that can defend itself must also use its strength to prevent conflict, protect peace and serve the interests of its people.

The security and stability we enjoy today have come at a great cost. On this Independence Day, we pay tribute to the martyrs of our Armed Forces, law enforcement agencies and police, and honour the sacrifices of their families. Their courage and commitment have helped safeguard our nation against external aggression and the threat of terrorism. The people of Pakistan remain deeply grateful for their service.

Pakistan’s role in the efforts to facilitate dialogue in the region is an important example of this responsibility. Pakistan has effectively used its channels of communication, its geographical location and diplomatic capital to encourage dialogue and de-escalation at a time when wider conflict could have serious consequences for the region and the world.

Pakistan’s approach is clear. We believe that disputes, no matter how serious, must ultimately be addressed through dialogue and diplomacy. Our security is linked to the peace and stability of our neighbourhood and the world at large. Pakistan will continue to support efforts that reduce tensions, protect regional stability and create conditions for cooperation.

This is also a time to look inward and focus on the work that will determine Pakistan’s future. We must strengthen our economy, create greater opportunities for our young people, improve education and skills, strengthen institutions through series of governance, economic and social reforms to ensure that the benefits of development and democracy reach every part and community of the country.

Pakistan’s greatest strength is its young people. Across the country and around the world, they are demonstrating their talent in science, technology, business, education and the creative industries. Our responsibility is to give them the education, skills and opportunities they need to realise their potential. By investing in our youth today, we are investing in Pakistan’s future.

For ordinary Pakistanis, national progress is measured in practical terms. It means a young person finding the skills and opportunity to build a career. It means a family being able to access quality education and healthcare. It means farmers, workers, traders and businesses being able to plan for the future with greater confidence. The strength of Pakistan will ultimately be judged by whether our national progress improves the lives of its people.

Today, on the festive occasion of Independence Day, I extend my warmest and heartfelt felicitations to all my fellow Pakistanis at home and abroad.

It is a matter of immense honour and pride for us all that the struggle for independence was led by eminent leaders like the Father of the Nation, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Mufakkir-e-Pakistan Poet of the East, Allama Muhammad Iqbal, and many other distinguished leaders. Today, as a nation, we pay our earnest tribute to the leaders, stalwarts and workers of the Pakistan Movement and to our forefathers who made determined efforts to turn the dream of a free motherland into a reality.

Our talented youth, skilled workforce, highly qualified professionals, hardworking farmers and labourers are the true guarantors of our country’s bright future.

During Marka-e-Haq, the armed forces, under the leadership of COAS & CDF Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, demonstrated exemplary unity, unwavering resolve and extraordinary courage, and added another glorious chapter in the history of defence and honour of our beloved homeland.

Makkah Joint Defence Agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye is a testament of Pakistan’s effective role in the region and its emerging strategic strength. Pakistan expresses its unwavering solidarity with the oppressed Palestinian people and with our brothers and sisters in Jammu and Kashmir, and reiterates its steadfast principled support for them.

Let us, on this day, renew our national resolve to work together for the development and prosperity, peace and stability, mutual harmony and national unity.

The festival highlighted Pakistan’s diverse cultural heritage, traditional cuisine, music, handicrafts, jewellery, attire, and the country’s tourism and trade potential for Belgian and European audiences.

A large number of Belgian and European visitors, along with members of the Pakistani diaspora, attended the festival and warmly appreciated Pakistan’s cultural vibrancy, culinary diversity, artistic traditions, and the hospitality of its people.

The Embassy of Pakistan in Brussels pays tribute to Ambassador Munawar Saeed Bhatti, whose tenure marked a significant period in strengthening Pakistan's engagement with the European Union, Belgium, and Luxembourg.

Ambassador Bhatti placed renewed emphasis on economic diplomacy, strategic dialogue, and institutional engagement with the European Union, Belgium and Luxembourg. In this regard, one of the defining milestones of his tenure was the signing of the GSP + trade Agreement between European Union and Pakistan, achieved through his broad diplomatic engagement and efforts. Through close coordination with stakeholders in Brussels, he helped advance Pakistan's case for enhanced market access, highlighting the country's commitment to international conventions on human rights, labour standards, environmental protection, and good governance.

A distinguished diplomat, Ambassador Bhatti served in several crucial roles during his illustrious career, including serving as Pakistan's Acting High Commission/Cd'A to India (2003-2006), High Commissioner to New Zealand (2006-2009), and twice headed the Division for South Asia at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Islamabad. He also served as the National Focal Point for Multilateral Agencies during the floods of 2010, leading a succesful campagin for international assitance during the difficult time.

Ambassador Bhatti's dedication, professionalism, and steadfast commitment to advancing Pakistan's interests further strengthened the Embassy's role as a bridge between Pakistan and the European Union, Belgium and Luxembourg. His contributions remain an enduring part of Pakistan's diplomatic legacy in Brussels.
