@elladorn_@QuicksilverClay Oh? you realized that alone, all by yourself? A significant progress!!! Yes "middlebrow" isn't really a rigorous term. It doesn't really have a stable significant because it's just a set of implied values you can used to pass Judgement without having to really argue your point.
@QuicksilverClay@elladorn_ Most of Bergman's films are middlebrow. Most of what we call arthouse films are middlebrow, very few are actual avant garde, experimental/really hermetic work. It doesn't say much about their artistic quality. Using "middlebrow" as a term of dismissal like OP is rather idiotic.
perfect, though almost tbh, but shot for shot and cut to cut his style is so obviously his own and so frequently copied by lesser artists that its power can be forgotten, which is one of the hallmarks of a great artist. Like Bergman. AI is causing an unfortunate new moralism,/
Not only is he as “singular” as Bergman, through his work in film restoration and advocating for international cinema he is also easily the most influential American director seriously trying to help create a more film literate US public. It’s not to say every single movie is/
Whatever you think abt Scorsese’s decisions, this is the kind of ignorant take we use to justify denigrating wildly important artists. Scorsese is one of the most singular, influential, and stylistically masterful directors in history, “arthouse” and “mainstream” alike./
I know it's a lot to ask here for people to think before tweeting but not seing the very consistent thematic undercurrents as well as highly recognisable film style in Scorsese oeuvre is just admitting you may be a bit dim.
@SuperHario64 They're very good films but I struggle to see him as an auteur w the same consistent aesthetic vision/outlook as his best contemporaries. Love Taxi Driver but I think of it more as a Paul Schrader film, esp after watching Hardcore
@elladorn_ You are a dumbass snob, that is almost invariably a pléonasme but still it needs to be said. this kind of pretentious posturing opposing so called "middlebrow" and sophisticated arthouse, is not film "literacy" it's certainly not sensibility. All you want is to feel superior.
@bigmonkeong He is still not using AI to make a film. You can criticize the move to use AI even for storyboarding, you can criticize it's ecological cost but he hasn't really shifted stance here.
