@LeithMotive@JeremyFarrar How are they funded? Direct from governments? Doubt most governments know enough to care. I expect most politicians in this country think complementary medicine has a role to play. They're wrong, but probably think that.
@LeithMotive@JeremyFarrar I'm not sure whether their cautious approach is the most effective one but when they do speak out against pseudoscience they are very careful in their wording in my experience. Which perhaps makes this all the stranger.
@LeithMotive@JeremyFarrar I think WHO are worried about the politics of all this. Parts of WHO are concerned that if they describe pseudoscience accurately that will cause some large communities to dismiss everything they say. 1/2
Our baby boy Rycroft died at Great Ormond Street last month.
The thread that follows is a little bit about who he was, and how you can help other children like him.
We would love any help you can give to get Rycroft's story to as many people as possible ❤️
Rishi Sunak is preparing his Government’s latest shameless CON - this time against our teachers. Watch this in disbelief & if you share my anger RT it widely. If UK news shows can’t get the job done let’s damn well do it ourselves!
#FairPayForTeachers
Wow. Just wow. Strap in for a stepping up of industrial action through to the end of this government which has both given up and decided to cling on to power. If you can no longer do the job, move on and let the new government get started on fixing your self-inflicted mess.
The number of forcibly displaced persons worldwide reached a devastating 108.4m in 2022.
Most people fled from Syria, Afghanistan and Ukraine.
Turkey is in first place among the host countries (3.6m), followed by Iran (3.4m), Colombia (2.5m), Germany (2.1m) and Pakistan (1.7m).
@MrTSci409@HuntResearchSch BDA has been much criticised for this - as evidence doesn't support it.
As for the individual, yes there is a placebo effect, but reinforcing a placebo effect is unhelpful.
Similar to saying tell people who use homeopathy that homeopathy doesn't work.
@MrTSci409@HuntResearchSch Why would pink pages help a dyslexic student access education? Dyslexia is not a visual disorder and evidence doesn't support this as an intervention. Ref https://t.co/3y2SBYuYKj
@oldandrewuk@miss_mcinerney@RogersHistory As a Biology teacher, people often ask me why they need oxygen.
I'd say disproportional gain is more the measure than the purpose. No disproportional gain then they didn't need the adjustment.
@miss_mcinerney@oldandrewuk@onechriswhite@RogersHistory I meant progress of already high attainers. High attainers at primary school who then have grade 7 target. Do they achieve more or less?
The thread is so long and branched I'm getting lost too.
@miss_mcinerney@oldandrewuk@onechriswhite@RogersHistory I agree. That is also a big part of it. However I have been told that SEND students should make the same progress from Primary as non-SEND in departmental data discussions. It seems we agree that is not always possible.
@oldandrewuk@miss_mcinerney@RogersHistory You say you are using it in the normal way - but after four requests (now five) you won't say what you think that is. I have assumed you don't want to say so had not pressed the point, but it's hard not to when you offer the above.
@miss_mcinerney@oldandrewuk@onechriswhite@RogersHistory I don't think such an analysis is sensible, but it happens all the time without statistical tests to offer some kind of objectivity about the differences being real.
@miss_mcinerney@oldandrewuk@onechriswhite@RogersHistory Your point is sensible, but it depends on how we define and measure. If you measure absolute progress on a national scale it is likely to be a small effect (I'd still like to know the size). How we define high attainers makes a difference.
