I found out, yesterday, about a sharp increase in the volume of fake Shenghen visa stamps now being used by passengers to travel to Europe. A lot of them are discovered at transit airports, and others on arrival in Europe.

The fake visas are said to be so expertly done, they can be very difficult for profilers without experience to catch before departure.

Some of such passengers, during transit in Casablanca, intentionally book long layovers to qualify them for hotel stay in the city. Once they enter the city, they disappear and try to find an illegal way into Europe.

This is one of the reasons why Morocco refuses Nigerians without visas entry into the city, even if they are qualified for hotel stay.

Despite this report, we have asked the Moroccan Mission, at our meeting, to look at the statistics elsewhere, and make entry into Morocco easier for genuine passengers who are entitled to hotel stay.

Our argument is simple;

Some other countries, like Ethiopia, do so. A Nigerian due hotel accommodation in Addis does not need a visa so long as they are flying the national carrier, Ethiopian. The airline provides electric buses that ferries passengers to their hotel, and bring them back to the airport for departure.

My question was, "How many such passengers ever absconded?" It is not all Nigerians that want to run away. We have way too many hardworking, legitimate people to be treated differently because of a few 'bad eggs'.

The Mission's argument was that Ethiopia may witness less of such occurrences because, unlike Morocco which is a few kilometres from Europe and, as such, an attractive proposition for illegals, Ethiopia does not have that situation.

Our response was for the Moroccans to check the data of Nigerians who ever absconded while transiting through their country. If the numbers are infinitesimal, then you have the answers you need.

It was an interesting conversation. The Royal Maroc Air country manager says that the airline has already made a case for Nigerians with the relevant authorities in their country, and it is being considered, subject to a number of variables.

While the Nigerian government continues to explore diplomatic channels to make international travel easier for Nigerians, it is imperative that citizens also avoid situations that make such efforts difficult or near impossible.

Another alternative we proposed to the airline was to either provide more rooms at the airport hotels - it presently has about 70 rooms - or provide lounge access to Nigerians who have layovers but no entry permit.

I absolutely agree. I always laugh when people say… don’t build that house in the village; it’s not a good investment… kinikan kinikan. Not every expense has to generate a financial return. Sometimes the return is joy, peace of mind, family memories, and personal satisfaction. That village house gives some people exactly that.

While I absolutely support and encourage investing (a portion of your earnings must go into some sort of investment), let us understand there are other important things in life.

Few of us came together to do something like this in 2019, just before COVID, and let me tell you how it failed.

One of us told us that a prophet had told his mom that he saw a vision that his friends were planning to kpai him. He requested for his money and pulled out.

Another person’s dad was diagnosed with a severe illness and needed surgery. He told us to lend him all the money we had contributed so far and that he would refund us. We refused, and he pulled out.

Another person lost his job and could not keep up with the contributions. How to calculate the percentage became a serious concern because the contributions were not equal.

We shared the money according to what everyone had contributed and moved on.

If true, this is a deeply insensitive statement.

But to answer the question of what I would have done differently, I can just look at the UK’s Andy Burnham who is trying to tackle the cost of living.

In just 19 days, he has:

- removed the 5% VAT on domestic electricity (it is 7.5% in Nigeria)
- capped bus fares at £2 per ride by reimbursing private sector operators of the difference in real costs
- pledged a 20% cut in business rates for pubs and clubs (an important part of British social life)
- maintained and adjusted Universal Credit to favour the poorest and most vulnerable.

So, I would have used the increasing tax revenue to tackle the cost of living. That is what I would have done differently at my own level. Hope that helps.

Today is another day to remind you that the bald eagle shouldn't be found in your logo. An organization's logo should reflect their strength and objectives.

The bald eagle that's currently featured on your logo is not an African bird. It is not found in Nigeria. It is also an opportunistic scavenger and fish eater. Meanwhile, the martial eagle we have in Nigeria is a ferocious hunter that actively hunts aggressive and heavy prey including hyraxes, small jackals, monitor lizards, domestic livestock, and young antelopes weighing considerably more than itself.

The bald eagle doesn't have much going for it beyond American PR. It is comparatively weak and sounds like a weak chicken.

As long as the Land Use Act retains governors as custodians of our land, a power not even the President can contest, no capitalist in this country will ever hold the advantage over a governor. It is a different form of power, and Cersei Lannister settled this argument years ago when Littlefinger told her that knowledge is power. She had her guards seize him, called them off, and then told him, “Power is power.” Everything else is negotiation.

Yahaya Bello shut down the Obajana plant, Dangote’s largest cement facility, just a few years ago, with the state assembly backing him. A plant of that scale sat idle for months and the richest man in Africa had to run to Abuja for cover, pleading for intervention, and the truth is that if Yahaya Bello had set out to play dirty, and with the Land Use Act on his side, it would have been something else entirely.

Only a few months ago, the head of a single regulatory agency got Dangote visibly rattled in public, and that is someone in an appointive position. Now imagine the Governor of Lagos State, where his investments are based, moved against him. Imagine a governor revoking the certificates of occupancy on the land carrying the refinery, the fertiliser plant and the port, citing overriding public interest, which the Act permits. That would be the end of an empire.

Yes, political power ends. So does money. Politicians have buried plenty of billionaires whose names mean nothing to anyone under thirty today. But enough of the worst case scenario. Dangote is an asset of this nation, of the continent, and of the Black race. We should pray that he is never tested by political power, because we already know how that test ends. 😄

Please ooo the purpose of HMO is NOT to encourage you to visit the hospital. Rather it's to protect you from financial ruin when you eventually fall ill.

What you pay is only a tiny fraction of your expected healthcare costs, pooled together with contributions from other people. That's why it's unfair when entire families use the opportunity of accompanying 1 unwell person in the family to seek treatment for everyone. What they're doing is simply drawing more from the shared pool than it was designed to cover, at everyone else's expense.

Paying 120k a year for HMO and then coming with your wife and 4 kids every Sunday to test/treat nonexistent malaria and viral colds is ridiculous and quite frankly not sustainable, especially if every family starts doing same under the guise of "we are paying for it". Obviously HMOs should not be banned but people should learn to utilize it better.

An hour later, police walked into her school and arrested her.

here's what happened in between.

Snapchat's AI scanned the private message. flagged it as a potential threat. automatically reported it to the FBI. the FBI forwarded it to local law enforcement. deputies arrived at the school within the hour.

she cooperated immediately. handed over her phone. when shown the message she said: "oh yes. okay. yeah. i'm realizing that was a bad joke. i did not mean it at all serious at all."

police determined she was not a threat. school officials determined she was not a threat. prosecutors reviewed and issued a disorderly conduct charge. she was released the next morning. she lost her student teaching placement.

This means:

Snapchat scans private messages.

Not just public posts or stories. private group chats between you and your closest contacts. automated AI. no human reviewed it first, got flagged and reported.

Snapchat AI → FBI → local police → school → arrest.

in under an hour.

Snapchat's privacy policy says it may share your information with law enforcement when it believes there is a risk of harm. the definition of "risk of harm" is determined by an algorithm.

you are not told when a message is flagged.
you are not told when a report is filed.
you find out when the police arrive.
