NUMBERS IN ACTION

[Haki Data Lab @HakiDataLab]

Matatus are the common mode of Transport in Kenya. Drivers and conductors face harsh and exploitative working conditions. We share their experiences using storytelling through videos that are played in Matatus.

After days of networking and learning at the Global Data Festival, together with our partners @data4change, we invited our Global partners for a 'Matatu' experience and dinner where they got to learn more about the 'Margins To Metrics' project.

Research must become a shared process in which those typically positioned as objects are recognised as active producers of knowledge and theorists of their own experiences.

Informal doesn't mean invisible. They build our cities, feed our families, and clean our streets. It's time we celebrate their labor with the dignity it deserves.

When we celebrate informal workers, we stop asking 'Why are they outside the system?' and start asking 'Why is the system failing to include them ?

[Youth Alive! Kenya @YouthAliveKenya]

Today, we mark Labour Day by recognising the dignity, resilience, and contribution of all workers who keep our communities and economies running.

At Youth Alive! Kenya, we celebrate our dedicated staff whose passion and commitment continue to drive impact across communities. Your work, energy, and belief in change are what make our mission possible.

We also honour domestic workers whose labour often goes unseen yet remains essential in sustaining households, enabling productivity, and strengthening care systems. Their rights, safety, and fair working conditions must remain a priority.

As we celebrate this day, we reaffirm our commitment to advocating for decent work, fair pay, and social protection for all, especially those in the care economy.

Happy Labour Day.

The research validates the dignity of Nairobi’s informal workers who keep the city running yet remain largely unrecognized and unprotected. Data is a critical step toward legal empowerment.
