Week 3 of our Friday community engagements explored addiction and its underlying realities. For some people experiencing homelessness, alcohol becomes a “blanket” against the cold and harsh street conditions. We must address both addiction and the circumstances that fuel it.
The Domestic Workers and Waste Pickers Cooperative, together with the Association leadership & EPR Committee, had the privilege of hosting the Tearfund International team.
We shared experiences, and our shared commitment to empowering workers & building sustainable communities.
@WaigumoNjoki We left with another question to carry to this Friday: How do we begin to reject the things that are harming us when we are already deeply attached to them?
Aluta✊🏿
@WaigumoNjoki
Our anti-drugs and substance abuse conversations continue. Last Friday We shared a cup of porridge, conversations, music(we had two artists amongst us) and most importantly listened to individual stories affected by drugs from the community. @WaigumoNjoki
@WaigumoNjoki A thought shared by one of the members stayed with us: “To stop something you are addicted to, you have to hate it.” This opened up deeper conversation and another person even confessed how the shared tactic helped her overcome khat addiction.

Tackling political violence means looking beyond the arrested to who recruits, organises and finances it. In this op-ed drawing from CHRIPS research: 63.6% of Mathare and Kayole residents say jobs and skills are a safety priority vs 51.1% for policing.

@WaigumoNjoki The conversation will continue every Friday from 9AM. We believe change begins with communities coming together, listening one another and taking ownership and creating solutions.
Moving forward with a sober nation!
Yesterday at Muthoni Nyanjiru Park, we began conversations with community members affected by drug use on the growing drug crisis in our communities.
We listened and shared lived experiences. One message stood out: “Avoid the first glass.”
