In 1952, my grandfather took me downtown to the July 4th Independence Day parade in downtown Topeka and the main attraction was what would likely be the final appearance of a Civil War Veteran as they were getting far and few between and he wanted to ensure I both saw and met one. His father, had been born a slave during the Civil War and my Maternal grandmother who lived was us was also born during the Civil War...this gentleman was only a few years older than them, but had that simple distinction of having served.
He was resplendent I recall in a uniform any would be proud to wear and looked as old as they come at 102 or 103. After the parade, my grandfather and I adjourned to his Veteran's Club for those who were Veterans of WWI and before. The old Vet, the Civil War Veteran from the parade joined us at the War Dads, as the cub was called. The other vets ignored the old guy as they had all heard his stories a thousand times. My grandfather urged me to go talk to him; get him talking he said, ask him about the war he fought in and then just listen.
So I did just that.
He welcomed me and what he said was interesting; he said "precisely 100 years before when I was your age after a 4th of July celebration when America was not 176 years old as it is today but only 76 years old and it was not at a War Dads but at a Liberty Hall back East and my grandfather urged me to talk to an old soldier who had been in the parade. That old soldier told me about being born in another country right where we sat and under the control of the Army of the King of that country and then how when he was older he was part of the Army that fought and won the Freedom, just one of the many and now he was shaking my hand and this was all the older America was. That was 100 years ago today, he said, and now, I am shaking your hand. You are shaking hands with a Civil War soldier who shook hands with a Revolutionary War soldier...this is all the older America is, and no more. Someday when you are my age; you will shake hands with a boy your age now and America will be 276 years old. There will only be two soldiers between him and that Revolutionary War soldier - you and me, buddy. You and me. Now, go back to your Grandpa and enjoy him while you can."
I think of that old Civil War Veteran every July the 4th. America is still quite young and many fought and died to give us this Nation which is quite young and very vulnerable. We need to protect her.
There are a great many benefactors who give with insistence of animosity; they insist that their names not go on such things. Look next time you go to an event at the donors list and you will see at the top of the lists Anonymous (#) the number simple reflecting the number of anonymous donors at that particular level.
Many Foundations, ours included, only give anonymously with the recipient also not knowing who the donor is beyond the one person handling the donation.
Today my @OtterBox on my 7 year old IPhone 11 fell apart, simply disintegrated.
This happened once before and these things are of course guaranteed for life so I went to the @OtterBox website back then and in 2-3 minutes a new on was on the way. I was impressed. Now 4 years later after protecting my phone every single day, the only question asked was is the protective glass screen damaged also? “No, it’s okay.” 3 minutes later, a replacement Otterbox on the way - great company, great warranty.
@EmmyGisa3 ~this is still and always ridiculous; if she can do this she can simply mouth "HELP ME!!!" Any reasonable person will be looking at her face and not her hands. Humans look at each other's when they communicate, not at one another's hands.

Not familiar with Bad Bunny so don’t know if his music is good or bad. I’m just going to watch what I know Lee Brice, Kid Rock All-American Halftime Show.
For anyone that may wonder what the largest man-made structure in the world was in 1890; it was in Scotland - this photograph was taken for publication in Shepp's Photographs of the World, 1891.
The first brand new car I bought (fully loaded) was a '77 Diesel Rabbit that got 59mpg and it was $4700. The next was a '84 Diesel Golf also fully loaded and that was $7400 out the door ...it was a far heavier and larger vehicle that only got 56mpg. Each of those I drove a quarter of a million miles before selling with not a thing wrong with them.
First new sports car I purchased was a '91 Toyota MR2 Turbo with all options for $25,700. Last new one was a 2018 Abarth Spyder also fully optioned for $34,500.
Mororcycles likewise - my '77 Harley Cafe Racer (Ser #51 The one Cycle World Tested) cost $3700, then the most expensive Harley from the factory.
Harley's now go from $10K to $45K MSRP.
Or; you could simply save the same amount of money every month and pay the taxes on the interest using long term CD at the highest rates possible and always reinvest it all. Now, when you hit a certain age...no one will tell you that you will have to start withdrawing investments and paying Capital Gains tax. ...and what do you mean I now have to start paying IMRAA? What's IMRAA??? My Medicare goes up? It doubles! It triples? BecausemI had a 401K? Seriously?
@DannerFoundati1@DarkMiner since I'm now in my 50s, I feel this. yes it's good we saved, but the 401(k)s have denied us diversification, will force us to do what the govt wants. i wish I'd kept more control of my own money when younger. meet the match and move on to a better investment opp.
I have no clue who this guy is or what his political views are. Party aside he is telling the truth about a basic function and reality of American citizenship. These are the kind of people we need leading this country and our communities. Tough, real, experienced. They tell you exactly how it is, no sugar coating.
I never say people don’t have a right to protest. I’ve lead peaceful protests and we emphasized the peaceful… we should be protesting in this country, the question is what, where and to whose end? I personally think conservatives should be in the streets everyday for any number of abominable breaches of their constitutional rights. (cough cough… taxes, secure elections). Still I hope and pray that everybody understands the difference between protest and revolution, on both sides of the political divide.

@DerrickEvans4WV Why are those old people without costumes trick or treating? We had approx 350 kids, many with a parent, many with both and nearly all were costumed except a couple who were very disabled or extremely young (1st Halloween)
Friend called me and told me her ‘Ring’ doorbell rang at 2AM last night and there was no one there…then again at 2:15, same thing. At 2:30 she looked real close and saw a mouse was on the doorbell…apparently to get warm and then after a few minutes it would get toasty and leave. Apparently the doorbell gives off heat and it was cool outside.
Sounds like either the door mouse will have to go…or the Ring doorbell.
On the issue of blacks and whites…only met one person who was truly white; guy lived on our block when I was a kid and he had yellow hair and pink eyes. And similarly only ever met one guy who was truly black; my mom dated him and he was from some West African country…many said he was a dead ringer for Harry Belafonte, except he was black.
Oh, by the way; both the truly white and the truly black man…they were both of the Negro race and from the very same country a generation or two removed. One just happened to be an albino.
My mother also dated a friend of this individual who was truly black and from the same area and had similar genes…he was a medium brown and had no caucasian blood whatsoever.
Black is a color. White is a color. Both are very rare.
Ethnicity…pure ethnicity in today’s world is extremely rare indeed and only found in very extremely isolated communities of places like New Guinea or Northern Labrador.
Essentially, we are all mutts…all the same. No black, no white, only beige.
