Yeah this is the part that hits different. Open weights mean pretty much any country can now run a real frontier model if they want to. The actual bottleneck just shifted to hardware, but China and a few others are already building their own chips that can handle this stuff, so it’s not like everyone has to beg Nvidia forever. AMD’s in the mix too. Feels like the whole “permanent underclass” thing just got a little harder to enforce.

Meanwhile Kimi K3 just dropped 2.8 trillion open weights and downloadable, private, hostable, and ready to build on.
Canada doesn’t need to spend billions training a frontier model from scratch.
Host the best open models on Canadian infrastructure.
Fine-tune them here.
Keep Canadian data in Canada.
Build Canadian products on top.
As better open models arrive, simply upgrade.
Own the infrastructure.
Own the data.
Own the capability.
That’s real sovereign AI.

Canada has zero frontier AI models of its own.

Cohere is building good models, but we’re still nowhere near the frontier.

Meanwhile, Kimi K3 weights are dropping a 2.8T model approaching frontier territory that can be downloaded, hosted privately and built on.

This should be a huge deal for Canada.

We keep talking about “sovereign AI” as if that means Canada has to spend billions training a frontier model from scratch.

Why?

Take the best open-weight models in the world. Host them on Canadian infrastructure. Fine-tune them here. Keep Canadian data in Canada. Build Canadian products and research on top of them.

As better open models arrive, upgrade.

The goal shouldn’t be owning every weight from day one.

The goal should be owning the infrastructure, the data and the capability.

Maybe I’m missing something, but why ISN’T this a major part of Canada’s sovereign AI strategy?

❌ Lower taxes
❌ Weaker labour & animal welfare standards 😡
❌ Limited traceability

But there are serious risks:
👉 biosecurity concerns
👉 disease outbreaks (e.g., Brazil hid mad cow disease for TWO YEARS)
👉 no CFIA inspections in Mercosur countries for over a decade.

The Liberals helped create Canada’s food affordability crisis and now their solution is a Mercosur trade deal to import cheaper beef and destroy our farms with NO reciprocal trade agreement? 🤯😡

The answer is to support our ranchers, not ruin them!

This is the kind of immigrant story that actually makes Canada stronger.

A guy who escaped Iran as a kid in 1989 just laid it out plain and simple. He came here and was blown away that parades were about Santa, balloons, and kids having fun — not tanks and missiles. He blended in. He didn’t get offended by pork on the BBQ or rainbow flags. He embraced it.

Now he’s watching newcomers show up and try to bring the exact same poisonous crap they ran from — getting angry at Canadian traditions, shoving religion down everyone’s throat, refusing to participate in something as basic as handing out Halloween candy, and trying to change the rules instead of joining the country that welcomed them.

His message is simple: Canada opens its arms. The least you can do is assimilate and mind your own business. If you’re not here to become Canadian, he’ll personally buy you the plane ticket home.

This is the difference between real immigration that built this country and the current mess that’s fracturing it. One group wanted to join Canada. The other wants to turn Canada into the place they fled.

We need more of the first kind. A lot less of the second.
