Director of Policy Analysis (@mrubin1971) Michael Rubin: Greece Should Recognize Somaliland
Michael Rubin argues that active Greek diplomacy has largely helped shield the Eastern Mediterranean from revisionist and terrorism-supporting forces, but stresses that Greece’s strategic interests extend beyond the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean.
As Greece increasingly becomes a European trade and energy hub, Rubin says its interests now reach as far as the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. With Turkey expanding support for the government in Mogadishu, he suggests Greece should at minimum establish diplomatic representation in Hargeisa, following the example of Denmark, the United Kingdom, and Kenya.
Going further, he proposes Greece could follow Israel’s lead by recognizing Somaliland as part of a community of moderate, law-based maritime states.
