A pleasure to chat to @edvaizey on @TimesRadio about my new book, 'Never Again? How the West Betrayed the Jews and Itself', today.
The idea that this is anything like the Rushdie case is sinister and factually wrong. The attempt to draw equivalence is deliberate and enables Islamists and their hard-left fellow travellers to deflect by citing this crap whenever the Rushdie affair is brought up.
Palestine poppies. The national security adviser’s wife. Civil servants embedded in newsrooms. These three stories, which I discussed on TalkTV last night, reveal something disturbing about modern Britain: we are losing our way.
At first glance, they have little in common. One concerns the man at the heart of our national security, another the most cherished symbol of national mourning, the third our national broadcaster. But look closer and the same thread runs through all three.
In each case, something that belongs to all of us, whether it is the safety of the realm, the memory of our war dead or the impartiality we pay for through the licence fee, is being bent to the service of a narrow political cause. And, more often than not, that cause is the same one.
Take Jonathan Powell. As national security adviser, he has access to our most sensitive intelligence and a hand in decisions that could determine whether British citizens live or die. The public is entitled to expect sound judgement, discretion and an unsentimental understanding of the threats we face. Which is why the latest intervention by his wife should worry us all...

Not sure the wife of the National Security Advisor should be leaking where decision making sits in Government on…National Security?
This tweet suggest he tells her who makes decisions, and how, on national security issues…
If it makes you feel better to frame it that way Jake but it is in fact a picture I took of poppies blooming on top of a massacre site at the erased Palestinian village of Burayr about ten miles east of the Gaza Strip fence. You can find it on pre 1948 maps if you want to check and you can find Burayr survivors/descendants in Jabaliya refugee camp, tho it will be hard as that too is now erased.
The very earliest Jewish settlers escaping Russian pogroms in 1882 openly proclaimed their plan to build a Jewish state in Ottoman Palestine by colonising it at which time Jews were less than 2% of the Pal population. It was hard going for the Jewish colonists until after WW1 when the Brits took over and gave them a helping hand.

Who's going to tell @Tessadunlop that the WWII Palestinian leader, Amin al-Husseini, was an ally of Hitler, who recruited Muslims for the SS and helped spread Nazi antisemitism throughout the Arab world?

“Mostly peaceful,” declared the BBC’s Paris correspondent as France descended into violence. Behind him, cars burned, masked men battled police and shops were looted.
Remember Comical Ali, Saddam Hussein’s information minister, insisting everything was fine as American tanks rolled into Baghdad? Meet the Comical BBC.
But here’s the hypocrisy exposed in my new column.
When rioters burn French cities, the BBC distinguishes between a violent minority and the peaceful majority. When Jewish extremists attack Palestinians in the West Bank, the violence becomes a story about the settler population as a whole.
Yet Israeli security officials estimate that just 300 Jewish extremists are involved in such attacks, out of a population of roughly 480,000. That's barely 0.06 per cent.
In other words, the people the BBC is most reluctant to describe as “mostly peaceful” are the ones for whom the description is demonstrably true.
Why does one violent minority become an aberration, while another becomes the defining characteristic of an entire community?
My new column exposes the BBC’s sliding scale of outrage.
