On Wednesday, Xi Jinping lands at Joint Base Andrews, and President Trump will be waiting for him on the tarmac. Then comes a flyover by a B-2 and four F-22s and a meeting between Melania Trump and Peng Liyuan.
Nothing quite like that happened when Trump went to Beijing in May. Xi wasn't waiting for him, there were no flyovers, and there was no meeting of the first ladies.
"Reciprocity" is the administration's watchword. But the asymmetry in pageantry reflects a broader asymmetry in the relationship: Beijing believes rare earths tamed Washington, and Washington at times seems to agree.
Below, I've pulled together quick brief on the ten issues that will likely define the state visit, from the Busan truce and rare earths to AI dialogue, Taiwan, and Iran.

It's sad. I was just talking to a China hand today about the uneven and perilous state of China military studies in this country, and now the Air Force is apparently shutting down its China Aerospace Studies Institute. We are moving in the wrong direction
This is a terrible idea. East Asia is the last place we should retrench from:
- The Middle East & global South are low stakes areas for the US, & we should get out
- Europe is high stakes, but the EU has the mass and Econ to handle its own affairs (Russia, terrorism)
- East Asia, by contrast, has high stakes, a very powerful challenger (China), and weakly co-aligned US partners. US power in theatre can make a clear, positive, & substantial difference
The Wall Street Journal reports that Iran launched a second, previously undisclosed attack on U.S. Navy ships Monday, following weekend ballistic missile attacks against a U.S. aircraft carrier and guided-missile destroyer. No U.S. ships were hit, but the repeated attacks are raising concerns among U.S. officials that Iran is employing more sophisticated missile technology and may be receiving assistance from China or Russia in tracking American warships.
Iranian state media has claimed the use of new missiles with advanced guidance capabilities. Weapons analysts told the Journal that systems equipped with electro-optical seekers could use imagery to maneuver toward moving targets, but Iran would still need an approximate location for the ships before launching the attack. That has prompted questions about whether foreign assistance could be helping Tehran locate U.S. naval forces.
The attacks come as the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports and sanctions continue to pressure Tehran. Following the weekend attacks, U.S. forces struck three Iranian oil tankers, which Washington said were part of a network funding the IRGC and its proxies. The Journal reports that 19 U.S. warships are currently supporting operations in the Middle East.

The 20th century was a fantastic century,
It was also an extremely long one,
It started at some point in the 1880s and it really continued until about 2020.
But it’s gone, it’s finished, and it’s not coming back.
We’re finally in the 21st century, and history isn’t going to necessarily play exactly how it did in the 20th century.
We’re in the middle of a grand restructuring, and I wouldn’t trust anyone yet to tell you how this all ends. That’s the beauty of living through history.
These are the good old days.
Worth adding Italian designs to the list. Ideally have one of them buy into a yard somewhere on the Great Lakes. Gotta think outside the box on this one.
Kills me that Japan went from proposal to cutting steel on a sort-of-DDG(X)-scale ship and we've been engaging in a lot of talk bout the actual DDG(X) for double that.
Shipbuilding is one issue. The DoD deciding in a timely fashion what it wants is another.,
Sea denial ≠ sea control. Operational relevance of drones (and guided stand-off munitions for that matter) in naval combat, even in littoral or confined waters remains overstated for this reason in popular discussions.

Imagine you spend billions of your tax dollars to prop up a defiant client state who has been dragging you into forever wars, and then you have to raise your counter intelligence level in fear that this state is spying on you

Rome did not fall because its later emperors were inferior to Augustus. Many empires have survived inferior leadership even in good times.
Rome fell because the middle layer the Senate, the legions, the provincial administration lost the capacity to compensate for bad leadership at the top.
It is often the middle that holds civilization together, and the middle that history forgets.
🇰🇵🇰🇷 North Korea has removed the goal of unification with South Korea from its constitution
The country has adopted constitutional amendments that clearly define its territorial borders. The new text states that the DPRK borders China and Russia to the north and the Republic of Korea to the south.
In addition, the clause regarding unification with South Korea has been completely removed.
The previous version of the constitution (Article 9) stated that the DPRK would “strive to reunify the country on the principles of independence, peaceful unification, and great national unity.”
References to the achievements and goals of previous leaders related to national reunification were also deleted.
