There's a physicist at Stanford named Safi Bahcall who modeled this exact principle and the math is wild.

He calls it "phase transitions in human networks." When you're stationary, your probability of a lucky event is limited to your existing surface area: the people you already know, the places you already go, the ideas you've already been exposed to. Your opportunity window is fixed.

When you move, your collision rate with new nodes in a network increases nonlinearly. Double your movement (new conversations, new cities, new projects) and your probability of a serendipitous encounter doesn't double. It roughly quadruples. Because each new node connects you to their entire network, not just to them.

Richard Wiseman ran a 10-year study at the University of Hertfordshire tracking self-described "lucky" and "unlucky" people. The single biggest differentiator wasn't IQ, education, or family money. Lucky people scored significantly higher on one trait: openness to experience. They talked to strangers more, varied their routines more, and said yes to invitations at nearly twice the rate.

The "unlucky" group followed the same routes, ate at the same restaurants, and talked to the same 5 people. Their networks were closed loops. No new inputs, no new collisions.

Luck isn't random. Luck is surface area. And surface area is a function of movement.

The lobster emoji is doing more work than most people realize. Lobsters grow by shedding their shell when it gets too tight. The growth requires a period of total vulnerability. No protection, no armor, soft body exposed to the ocean.

That's the cost of movement nobody posts about. You have to be uncomfortable first. The new shell only hardens after you've already moved.

That statistic should both comfort you and wake you up.

Most lost children are found quickly. But the ones who aren’t? They usually made one mistake.

And here’s the uncomfortable truth:

It’s often the exact thing most parents teach them.

We tell our kids:

“If you get lost, come find me.”

It sounds logical. It sounds empowering.

It’s WRONG!

The Mistake Most Lost Children Make:

When children realize they’re separated, they do three things almost automatically:

They panic.
They wander.
They try to find you.

Every step makes them harder to locate.

From a search standpoint, movement creates chaos.

Parents retrace their steps.
Security scans zones.
Staff lock down areas.

Search works best when movement stops.

When a child keeps walking, they move outside the original search radius. Helpers are looking where they were last seen — not where they’ve wandered.

Stillness increases probability.

Movement expands the problem.

The first lesson is not “go find me.”

It’s this:

Stop. Stay. Yell.

Why Stillness Wins:

Think like a search team.

If a child stays put:

Parents can retrace steps.
Security can scan systematically.
Helpers converge to one fixed location.
The search radius remains small.
If a child keeps moving:

The search area expands.
Adults pass each other.
Missed connections multiply.
Minutes stretch into hours.
Stillness keeps the math on your side.

Teach Them Who to Approach:

The second mistake we make as parents?

We say, “Find an adult.”

Not any adult. Not the nearest stranger. Children need a filter.

Teach them to look for, if at all possible:

A mother with children.

Caregivers who already have kids with them are statistically among the safest people to approach in public settings. They are visible, stationary, and more likely to engage quickly.

It’s a clear, concrete instruction.

Children don’t process vague categories like “safe adult.”

They process visuals.

“Find a mom with kids” is visual.

A Phone Only Helps If the Number Is Known:

We often assume phones solve everything.

They don’t — unless your child can use one. Even young children can memorize a 10-digit phone number with repetition.

But you must train it.

Practice it like a song.

Sing it in the car.
Chant it at bedtime.
Turn it into rhythm.

Repetition becomes recall.

In an emergency, recall matters more than theory.

The Code Word Rule:

One more layer of protection.

Choose a private family code word.

Something only your household knows.

If someone approaches and says:

“Your mom sent me.”

Your child asks:

“What’s the code word?”

No word.
No go.

This simple rule eliminates manipulation attempts instantly.

It gives your child agency without requiring them to evaluate character.

Real Safety Is Training — Not Luck!

We don’t get safer by hoping.

We get safer by practicing.

Teach:

• Phone number
• Code word
• Stop, stay, yell
• Find a mom with kids

Multiple skills.
Simple instructions.
Clear visuals.

Five minutes of training can replace hours of panic. This isn’t about fear. It’s about preparation.

Because when a child gets separated, the clock starts.

And what they do in the first minute determines what the next thirty look like.

That’s real protection.

Après l’article « Il serait là… en Belgique : quand “Gakanya” réapparaît et que l’exil se met à trembler » (02 février 2026), puis l’éditorial qui a suivi, le droit de réponse signé le 03 février et publié le 04 février 2026 par le lieutenant-colonel Claver Nahimana n’a pas éteint l’incendie : il a déplacé la braise. Car le cœur du scandale n’est pas un démenti — il était attendu. Le cœur du scandale, c’est cette question qui brûle : comment en est-on arrivé au point où des présumés auteurs de l’innommable prétendent encadrer la douleur, surveiller la parole et dicter la morale à ceux qui ont survécu ?

Dans son texte, l’incriminé rejette catégoriquement toute accusation, au nom d’un argument martelé comme une preuve : il n’a fait l’objet d’aucune condamnation, d’aucun mandat d’arrêt, d’aucune inculpation, d’aucune procédure judiciaire. Voilà, selon lui, ce qui scelle son innocence. Mais chacun sait ce que vaut cet argument dans un système où l’impunité est une méthode, parfois une récompense. Au Burundi, l’absence de poursuites ne lave pas. Elle protège. Elle consacre. Elle signifie souvent : tu es du bon côté.

Soyons clairs : personne n’attendait qu’un haut officier, produit et bénéficiaire d’un appareil répressif, vienne “avouer” sur les réseaux des crimes présumés — crimes de sang, disparitions forcées, tortures, violences sexuelles — que ce même appareil nie jusqu’à l’évidence. Ce n’est pas le déni qui étonne. C’est son arrogance. C’est cette façon de transformer la présomption d’innocence en bouclier total, tout en refusant à d’autres le minimum : la vérité, le deuil, la justice.

Comment en est-on arrivé là ? À cette scène renversante où les victimes doivent peser chaque mot, justifier chaque larme, tandis que les présumés auteurs se posent en arbitres du langage ? À ce moment où l’on exige des survivants une “courtoisie parfaite” envers ceux qui leur ont refusé la moindre humanité ? À cette inversion morale où dénoncer devient suspect, pendant que le silence devient confortable ?

Ce renversement n’a qu’un carburant : la peur. Et il a une arme : la menace judiciaire. Car derrière le droit de réponse plane un message à peine voilé : taisez-vous, sinon nous vous poursuivrons en justice . Voilà le chantage moderne : croire à la justice quand elle protège les puissants, la nier quand elle est demandée par les victimes. Paradoxe obscène : ils réclament des droits pour eux, tout en imposant l’oubli aux autres.

Dans ce contexte, brandir l’absence de condamnation comme certificat d’innocence revient à confondre justice et impunité. C’est oublier — ou feindre d’oublier — qu’un système verrouillé peut parfaitement fabriquer des dossiers vides et des mains “propres”, tout en laissant derrière lui des familles sans nouvelles, des mères sans tombe, des proches sans réponse. La mémoire, elle, n’a pas besoin de jugement pour exister : elle vit dans les noms, les dates, les absences.

Et c’est précisément là que se joue l’essentiel : qui contrôle le récit ? Les survivants, qui demandent vérité et justice ? Ou ceux que l’on accuse — même indirectement — d’avoir participé au renseignement, au repérage, au ciblage ? La bataille est aussi une bataille des mots : qualifier, nommer, documenter. Et ce pouvoir-là, certains voudraient encore le confisquer.

On comprend alors pourquoi l’exil tremble. Parce que l’exil n’est pas seulement une distance : c’est une promesse. La promesse d’être enfin hors de portée. Quand cette promesse vacille, ce n’est pas “un débat” qui s’ouvre : c’est une vieille peur qui reprend ses droits. Et quand la peur revient, elle ne revient jamais seule : elle ramène le silence, l’isolement, la méfiance.

L’histoire nous met pourtant en garde. « Le silence des opprimés est la victoire des oppresseurs », rappelait Martin Luther King Jr. Et Albert Camus l’écrivait avec une simplicité tranchante : « Mal nommer les choses, c’est ajouter au malheur du monde. » Voilà le piège. Faire taire la parole. Tordre les mots. Exiger des victimes qu’elles s’expriment “comme il faut”, pendant qu’on leur refuse l’essentiel.

Nous en sommes arrivés là parce que l’impunité a appris à parler fort — et à menacer. Parce qu’elle a inversé les rôles : le survivant devient suspect, le présumé bourreau devient donneur de leçons. La riposte n’est pas la haine, ni le tribunal des réseaux : c’est la parole tenue, la mémoire debout, le refus d’être gouverné par le renseignement, le repérage et le ciblage jusque dans l’exil. Car une chose est certaine : nos actes voyagent. Et tôt ou tard, ils demandent des comptes.
