One thing I took away from Zak van der Merwe’s post on scalable control planes:
A good control plane hides complexity from the customer so everything seems to “just work.”
But imo it’s worth taking this a step further:
A good control plane should hide both the complexity of the underlying system and the consequences of that complexity.
By that, I mean rejecting the status quo of eventual consistency.
It is no good if your control plane feels like ‘magic’ for the most part, but immediately breaks down when a customer attempts reads a transaction they just wrote only to find it missing.
Although this is a well-established design choice that experienced customers expect, it is still tedious and breaks the promise that “it just works” and starts to no longer feel like magic.
I think as more non technical founders enter the tech ecosystem, arriving with the expectation that services work intuitively, we’ll see a greater demand for strong consistency…

@zena_rec@joshqharris@returnmates We’re actually an online returns gateway for E-commerce stores.
So you can shop and physically return purchases from the same online store.
@_buildd I disagree. If you can’t build something until you’ve built a prestige marketing plan It in all likelihood will fall a part because plans don’t always work, intuition doesn’t always work. Just build something people want, everything else is not nearly as important
@agazdecki Not too sure about this. In the early days of your startup, product is king. It should be the first, second and third thing on your priority list. Distribution can come later.
@VaibhavSisinty This is just wrong. Working hard for an uncommon length of time can most assuredly guarantee success in some shape or form. People just say “work smart not hard”, as an excuse for not working hard in general and having the ego of thinking they are smarter than their peers.
@tcburning My new startup 10 months in the making, Alpacka Returns (@alpacka_returns).
A platform and ECommerce plugin that lets shoppers physically return any purchase from any online store in just a few clicks.
I would love to talk to you about it sometime!
I absolutely *abhor* returning packages
I don’t even know what is so awful about it, but I can’t stand it
which one of y’all is doing something about this problem!!
