@ZouhairsMurid would result in a very understandable ignorance of what the command of God truly is. Of course, enlightened individuals may have come to the correct conclusions, but making the argument that the awaam KNOWINGLY accepted their rabbis words over the word of God is difficult, IMO.

Does saying "arbaab" change the point about intentionality? That's what I was referring to, since it is my understanding that for asharis, shirk requires intention.

@ZouhairsMurid ..and it is a tougher argument to make that the aam kitaabi knew what was in the book in order to follow other than what was commanded, therefore doing shirk.

I don't see how the aam kitaabi had any intent to do shirk, yet the ayah says they made their priests into lords.

I think the next point is to make a distinction between the rabbis/priests themselves vs the laymen Kitaabi.

The priests are definitely falling into shirk since they KNOW what they are doing. However, the verse addresses the kitaabi... 1/2

@ZouhairsMurid I’m curious - what is the response from the Ashari side about Surah Tawbah ayah 31? This may be off topic but related to shirk being defined as having intention as a necessary prerequisite in the Ashari paradigm.
