On February 25th, we celebrate the 129th birthday of Professor William Leo Hansberry. Committed to expanding our understanding of Africa’s past, Hansberry taught courses at Straight College (now Dillard University) and joined the faculty at Howard University.

Hansberry provided an intellectual foundation for Africanist research and scholarship and contributed to co-founding the Ethiopian Research Council (1934) and the African-American Institute in 1953 (now known as the Africa-America Institute).
