๐ฎ New research from the Happy Maths project has been published in the International Journal of Serious Games!
We explored how primary school students experienced an infinite leaderboard while playing one of our digital maths games, 'Seven Spells'. ๐งต๐
#GameBasedLearning
1/ Leaderboard enjoyment was influenced by players' ranking positions and their maths anxiety levels. ๐
2/ Maths anxious players disliked the leaderboard more than non-anxious players, even when controlling for their position. ๐
1/ ๐ฎ Can games help kids learn better? Our study explored how playing the digital game Seven Spells impacts primary school studentsโ adaptive expertise in math! ๐งฎโจ Hereโs what we found: ๐
6/๐งฉ What We Learned:
Games like Seven Spells can help develop adaptive expertise in math โ but game design matters!
โ๏ธ Balancing competition and engagement is key ๐ for effective learning.
I had a blast last week presenting the Seven Spells game from @HappyMathsIE as part of the U First Programme at @DCU! ๐งฎ๐ฎ๐ช
Secondary school students participated in several events and saw the university up close. They also got to play for a bit, as well as see some code! ๐ฎ๐พ
Our new research from the Happy Maths Project is out at #ECGBL2024! ๐
We studied how players' performance in the maths game 'Seven Spells' is influenced by factors like move complexity & Maths Anxiety, and if these affected players differently depending on the game mode.
A new paper from @HappyMathsIE is officially out! ๐
In this work, we analysed students' performance in different versions of a digital maths card game, and which variables may have influenced their performance. ๐๐งฎ

Finally, we are grateful to @scienceirel, who provided the funding for Happy Maths. Getting the tablets where children play our games and visiting schools all over Ireland would not be possible without their support. โค๏ธ
We just held the first-ever Happy Maths Cup at @WeAreTUDublin! Primary school students were welcomed into the Grangegorman campus, representing their schools in a tournament filled with maths. Players showed off their brain power and maths knowledge by playing Seven Spells! โ
The 1st Happy Maths Cup was an amazing milestone and a dream come true for the team, who worked hard to make the Happy Maths Cup a reality! We also want to thank the volunteers who were there yesterday to help at the event.
