WHAT THREATENS #ARMENIAN DEMOCRACY?

#Armenia will become a developed, competitive state if #democracy is established and strengthened. Armenia has no oil and gas, no access to the sea. Armenia is under a semi-blockade. There are constant #security risks. Armenia is surrounded by aggressive dictatorial regimes. After #Ukraine, Armenia has the biggest security risks.

1. AGGRESSIVE MILITARY ATTACKS BY AZERBAIJAN

Dictator Aliyev, who has made the lives of #Azerbaijanis hell, is excited by the criminal #Putin's war against Ukraine. #Aliyev regularly carries out #military attacks on Armenia, #NagornoKarabakh, occupies territories, kills people.

The Aliyev regime benefits from continued hostility and #war with Armenia, which helps to maintain its power. As long as there’s no peace agreement, Aliyev's aggressive regime will endanger Armenia's democracy.

2. SURROUNDED BY AGGRESSIVE STATES

Four of Armenia's five neighbors are dictatorial regimes: #Russia, #Turkey, #Azerbaijan, #Iran. Armenia has non-conflict relations with Iran. Iran did not oppose the #European observers.

Meanwhile, Russia, Azerbaijan and Turkey together exert #military pressure on Armenia in order to solve the Nagorno-#Karabakh conflict with their plan. Russia sold billions of dollars worth of #weapons to Azerbaijan, which were used against Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh.

Russia, Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Iran created the 3+3 format to isolate democratic Armenia and Georgia from the West. In order for Armenia not to be isolated, the #USA and the #EU should provide serious support to Yerevan for the development of the #economic, #democratic and #security spheres.

3. RUSSIA IS THE ENEMY OF ARMENIAN DEMOCRACY

It’s very dangerous for Armenia's democracy to be in #CSTO, #EEU. Any contact with Russia today has a toxic meaning for Armenia.

The US currently serves as a check against Aliyev's aggression toward Armenia. And Russia considers Armenia as a future participant of the #Belarus-Russia #UnionState, a gubernia, not a sovereign state. For this to happen, Armenia must give up democracy.

The existence of democratic Armenia is unacceptable and incomprehensible for the #Kremlin. Russia poses a greater threat to Armenia than Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan is not capable of eliminating Armenian statehood, but the Kremlin is capable.

In addition to supporting Azerbaijan's military #attacks, the Kremlin supports forces with regressive, #dictatorial tendencies in Armenia.

4. FORCES WITH AUTHORITARIAN IDEOLOGY IN ARMENIA

Undemocratic governments ruled in Armenia for decades. Despite certain failures, the citizens of Armenia have always maintained their democratic aspirations.

Armenia has always been rich in civil, oppositional #political movements. They fought against dictatorial regimes. In 2018, citizens achieved success and laid the foundation for democratic development.

Even if today's government has shortcomings, serious mistakes, it does not mean that the revolution of 2018 was not democratic and was not necessary.

The war of 2020 dealt a great blow to Armenia's democracy. #ProKremlin forces blamed democracy for the defeat in the war. It’s the biggest lie. Those forces did not receive decisive support from the people.

According to the "Caucasian Center for Research Resources" survey, 50% of citizens consider democracy in Armenia preferable to other systems. It’s not a bad indicator. Armenian citizens are not going to sacrifice democracy.

The government is obliged to carry out systemic #reforms and complete them. If Armenia is not democratic, it will lose its #statehood. Armenia does not have the resources for #authoritarianism.
