Biologist at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST): enthusiastic about Directed Evolution, Precision Genome Engineering, RNA Splicing.
BREAKING NEWS
The 2026 #NobelPrize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel “for their discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics.”
Glad to see our research on KAUST Discovery magazine. The work demonstrates a new approach for large DNA insertion in plants. Read the KAUST Discovery feature! https://t.co/iUCccIfhRZ
More resilient crops. Plants that produce medicines and vaccines. Achieving these goals is technically challenging, including the precise insertion of large, complex genes into plants.
KAUST researchers develop new approach to place large genes into specific, targeted locations within plant genomes. A new tool that expands what plant biotechnology can achieve.

A new route for targeted gene addition in plants 🌱
This study repurposes R2 retrotransposons for site-specific insertion of multikilobase DNA into rDNA loci in tobacco and rice without relying on CRISPR-induced double-strand breaks https://t.co/TlYmJcmud7
I am thrilled to share my latest co-first author publication in Nature Biotechnology. This work represents an exciting advance in plant genome engineering and is the result of the dedication, collaboration, and hard work of an outstanding team. 1/4

CRISPR excels at cutting and small edits, but clean, large-cargo insertion stays inefficient in plants. R2-mediated gene addition in plant systems is a mechanistically distinct, break-free route to writing large DNA. 4/4
By installing recombinase "landing pads" at targeted sites, we enable iterative gene stacking, the key capability needed to transform plants into programmable factories. We demonstrate the versatility of this platform in both a model plant (tobacco) and a major crop (rice). 3/4
