DANIEL MORGAN WAS AXED TO DEATH IN A PUB CAR PARK
Daniel Morgan was a private investigator at Southern Investigations in south London. In March 1987 someone buried an axe in his head in a pub car park in Sydenham.
His business partner was a man called Jonathan Rees. The detective who took over Morgan's old job and his old desk soon after was Sid Fillery. Both were arrested early on. Both walked.
Over the following decades the Metropolitan Police @metpoliceuk ran several separate murder investigations. They arrested 67 people in total. Eight of them were serving police officers. Nobody was ever convicted of anything.
If that pattern looks less like bad luck and more like a cover up, congratulations, you just summarised eight years of an independent panel's work.
In 2013 the government set up the Daniel Morgan Independent Panel to work out why a single murder kept failing to get solved. It took until June 2021 for the 1251 page report to land. It did not go easy on anyone. It found the Met institutionally corrupt, more interested in protecting its own reputation than solving the case.
The report was due out in May 2021. The Home Secretary at the time, Priti Patel @pritipatel, held it back for a review first. The Morgan family called the delay unnecessary. Draw your own conclusions.
Then in 2023 a stack of documents the Met had told everyone were lost or destroyed turned up in a locked cabinet at New Scotland Yard.
The police watchdog ordered an apology. A cover up inside a cover up is the kind of plot twist a script editor would send back for being too obvious.
The Met's official response to being called institutionally corrupt was that it does not accept the label.
A separate watchdog, HMICFRS, reviewed the same evidence and described the force's approach to corruption as indifference rather than corruption itself. Somehow that was offered as the reassuring version.
In July 2023 the Morgan family reached a financial settlement with the Met, who admitted liability for errors and corruption. The terms stayed confidential. Still no conviction. Still no named killer. Just a quiet payout, 36 years after the funeral.
Thirty six years on, this case stands as a working demonstration of what happens when the people meant to investigate police corruption are themselves the police.
Daniel Morgan never got his day in court. The institution that failed him got a strongly worded report and a cheque it didn't have to explain.

BREAKING: Trump's Education Secretary Linda McMahon hit with HISTORIC first-ever impeachment for illegally dismantling the department she runs Linda McMahon — the former pro-wrestling executive Trump installed to run the Department of Education — is now facing the first impeachment of an Education Secretary in American history. And the reason is simple: she's accused of breaking federal law to destroy her own department.
Oregon Democrat Suzanne Bonamici introduced articles of impeachment Thursday, accusing McMahon of "illegally transferring the operations of 6 offices under the Department of Education to other Federal agencies."
Here's the core of it. The Department of Education was created by Congress in 1980. By law, only CONGRESS can shut it down. But McMahon — carrying out Trump's campaign promise to dismantle it — has been gutting the department piece by piece anyway, using backdoor "interagency agreements" to shove its programs over to Health and Human Services and the Labor Department.
The problem? Many of those programs are LEGALLY REQUIRED to stay within the Education Department. McMahon doesn't have the authority to move them. She's doing it anyway.
"McMahon has made it her mission to close down the Department of Education, something she does not have the right to do," Bonamici said on the House floor. And she made clear exactly who gets hurt: "Educators and parents, especially parents of students with DISABILITIES, are distraught and asking us to take action to stop these illegal transfers."
That's the cruelty at the heart of this. The Education Department administers critical protections and funding for students with disabilities — kids who depend on federal oversight to get the education they're legally entitled to. McMahon is throwing that into chaos.
McMahon's response was pure deflection, whining on X that Democrats think "an impeachable offense is working to improve student outcomes" before pivoting to her favorite culture-war obsession — attacking trans students, a focus of hers since day one.
The impeachment is unlikely to succeed in the GOP-controlled House. But it draws a crucial line: a Cabinet official cannot simply IGNORE the law and unilaterally dismantle a department Congress created.
A wrestling executive shouldn't get to bulldoze public education.

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson: "If we were to lose the midterms heaven forbid these Democrats y'all impeachments not even the big concern They will turn every committee of Congress into an investigative body and they'll go after the president's family the cabinet his donors and friends."
This is exactly WHY Democrats need to win the midterms! Thanks for selling it @MikeJohnson.
Is this already open warfare by Russia against Poland?
Russia is recruiting "one-off agents" for acts of sabotage in Poland, according to Polish Foreign Minister Sikorski.
He stated that the Russian Federation is employing elements of hybrid warfare against the country, specifically through arson and other acts of sabotage.
According to him, the recruitment of operatives takes place via Telegram. Initially, individuals receive small sums—around 1,000 to 2,000 euros—for intelligence-related tasks. Subsequently, they may be offered up to 20,000 euros to directly carry out attacks.
Sikorski emphasized that these individuals are effectively deployed as "one-off agents" to commit arson and acts of sabotage in Poland.
Bodycam footage just came out of a farmer speaking against a planned data center, being handcuffed at a city council meeting for going a few seconds over the 3-minute public comment limit.
Darren Blanchard was speaking in Claremore, Oklahoma when two officers told him to leave, followed him to the front as he tried to hand documents to the council, and cuffed him as the crowd booed. He's charged with criminal trespass, a $200 offense, and is fighting it as retaliatory.
The case has become a marker for the wider fight over data center construction, where residents increasingly clash with developers over water, power, utility rates and farmland. Blanchard's sharpest point is about democracy itself: if attending a public meeting can get you cuffed, the chilling effect reaches well beyond one Oklahoma town.
Trump sued the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) for $10 Billion for “intentionally, maliciously, and deceptively doctoring" a speech Trump gave on 6 January 2021, before the US Capitol riots.
In court, the BBC asked Trump’s lawyers for the following:
Your move Mr Trump…
Anita Hill was attacked for warning us about Clarence Thomas. Hillary Clinton was attacked for warning us about Samuel Alito. Christine Blasey Ford was attacked for warning us about Brett Kavanaugh. E Jean Carroll was attacked for warning us about Trump.
#BREAKING: Hayes: We know that DOGE completely failed in its mission to reduce government spending, but there was enormous destruction we still don’t have a comprehensive view into
Rep Ro Khanna: “We have no view on it and frankly if you brought a lawsuit, maybe there will be discovery, but there were 83% of programs that were shut down. Then Congress, through the process of appropriations, actually restored some of them, but there still were dramatic cuts. The Lancet study talks about the potential deaths but there was a study in Boston…that talked about the actual deaths from what USAID cuts did, and all I’m saying is there needs to be transparency. Musk never came before the American people and said here’s why I’m cutting these things. He never came to Congress. He just did it at DOGE and it lead arguably to huge devastation, and you know now at least he’s SO ASHAMED of it. I mean, obviously, he doesn’t want to admit that this could have been the consequence.”😳
🚨🚨🚨 MS NOW just exposed that Trump’s rushed $14M Lincoln Memorial pool renovation completely fell apart in just three weeks!
Internal documents confirm ZERO evidence of vandalism, yet Trump blatantly lies to cover up his massive failure ⬇️
#BREAKING: Hayes: “…all this is newly relevant, not just because the world’s richest man hit a new wealth milestone, or because the U.S. government is becoming increasingly reliant on his companies, but because he’s now trying to LIE about this legacy and THREATENING a Congressman who wants to investigate it…On Twitter yesterday, Musk posted: ‘It’s time to sue this liar.’ In another post he called the Congressman ‘Ro The Robber’ and said he should be thrown in prison. But that number that Khanna cited [DOGE-related deaths] didn’t just come out of nowhere…it’s from a peer reviewed study by the Lancet Medical Journal that found: ‘The DOGE cuts to USAID could lead to more than 14 million additional deaths by 2030 averaging more than 2.4 million deaths per year. These deaths include 4.5 million among children younger than 5 years, or more than 700,000 deaths annually.’”😢
I HAVE COVERED A LOT OF WHISTLEBLOWERS. VICTORIA RIXON IS THE MOST CONSISTENT ONE I HAVE SEEN.
She does not disappear after one viral post. She does not go quiet when the trolls show up. She keeps showing up for the women, babies, and midwives she left behind. I admire that more than I can put into one sentence, so I am going to keep telling her story until people listen.
@Victoria_Rixon spent six and a half years as an @NHS midwife. She watched labour wards run on two members of staff. She watched colleagues go 12.5 hour shifts without food, water, or a toilet break, each responsible for up to 20 patients at once.
She watched a woman labour alone for ten hours behind a curtain with no care whatsoever. The baby needed emergency resuscitation.
She reported what she saw. That is literally what the NHS @NHSEngland told her to do during induction.
What happened next is a sham in how Britain's most trusted institution handles inconvenient truths. She was falsely accused of being responsible for the death of a baby. Her employer sent a cease and desist letter after her exit interview.
A member of NHS management delivered her a friendly warning, that ...
... "whistleblowers go missing overnight"
NHS manager said that. Out loud. To a midwife who raised patient safety concerns.
On 9 April 2024, Victoria handed back her Nursing and Midwifery Council @nmcnews registration and walked away from the career she had trained four years for and loved every day of.
Not because she stopped caring. Because she says the institution she worked for was actively harming the women and babies in its care, and punishing anyone who said so.
She is still speaking publicly today. She is still being harassed for it. The NMC @nmcnews, NHS England @NHSEngland, and the Royal College of Midwives @MidwivesRCM have had inquiry after inquiry and report after report, and the wards she described are still dangerously short staffed.
People like Victoria do not get medals. They get cease and desist letters and warnings about going missing.
The least we can do as a society is make sure her voice does not fade into the noise the way they wanted it to.
She kept showing up for women and babies who will never know her name. We can at least make sure her name does not disappear.

Nearly £1.6bn has been paid out, but thousands of sub-postmasters are still waiting for redress.
Complexity is no longer an excuse for delay.
Fujitsu must back its moral obligation with hard cash, and ministers need to be far more aggressive in demanding it. Now.

It's frankly insulting for the multi-millionaire Jeremy Hunt to want to end the triple lock when he "forgot" he bought 7 luxury apartments, has a ministerial and an MP pension plus a hefty severance payment for losing the election.
Tories have no shame.
BREAKING: Trump's Reflecting Pool contractors — including a TRUMP DONOR — are now under congressional investigation for the $16 million algae disaster.
The contractors behind Trump's botched $16 million Reflecting Pool — now a swampy, peeling, bright-green embarrassment — are officially in HOT WATER with Congress. And surprise: one of them is a major Trump donor.
Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR) launched an investigation into the disastrous renovation, demanding answers from John Cafaro, CEO of Green Water Solutions, and Curtis Wood, CEO of Atlantic Industrial Coatings — the two firms that scored NO-BID contracts to wreck one of Washington's most iconic landmarks.
The numbers are infuriating. Atlantic Industrial Coatings landed a $14.7 million contract — MORE THAN DOUBLE the original $6.7 million estimate. Green Water Solutions got $1.7 million for a filtration system that apparently doesn't filter.
Merkley nailed the hypocrisy: "After railing about waste, fraud, and abuse, Donald Trump spent more than $16 million on a renovation of the Reflecting Pool that's now peeling and chock full of algae. This is a massive waste of working families' hard-earned tax dollars. I'm launching an investigation because taxpayers deserve swift answers — and a REFUND."
Now, here's where it gets really swampy. Rep. Robert Garcia pointed out that contractor John Cafaro has donated EXTENSIVELY to Trump's campaign and aligned groups — and his firm has only ever had one other federal contract, which was ALSO a no-bid award handed out under Trump.
A Trump donor. No competitive bidding. A multi-million-dollar contract. A pool that immediately turned green. You can connect the dots with your eyes closed..
Merkley is also demanding answers about one truly absurd detail: on May 7, Trump's motorcade — at least a DOZEN armored vehicles — drove directly onto the drained pool so Trump could "inspect" it. The senator wants to know if anyone approved heavy vehicles rolling over the freshly repaired expansion joints. (Spoiler: that might explain a lot.)
The Interior Department's defense? "The White House was not involved in the selection process... Full stop." They also provided ZERO evidence for Trump's wild claim that "vandals" with knives sabotaged the pool.
A botched job by a Trump donor handed a no-bid contract. A motorcade driving on freshly applied pool surfacing. And taxpayers footing the entire bill.
It’s clear that the swamp has a new color scheme — and it’s looking exactly like algae green.
Please like and share if you’re SICK of Trump’s entire corrupt administration!
#BREAKING: Rep Ro Khana: “19 billionaires…have the wealth that’s equal to 12% of our economy. That is THREE TIMES the wealth concentration of the Gilded Age and its NOT compatible [to a democratic society] because it’s not just that @elonmusk is going to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to elect who he wants, he fundamentally believes that if a member of Congress says that he owes the American people an explanation, or that he should be subpoenaed, that he can just threaten to sue them, to put them in prison, that he has total impunity, and that he has a bigger voice, not just in his political contributions, but as a person in our democracy than the other 330 million people. And you have a group of people who have hoarded extreme wealth and power, really which is what Bernie Sanders has been talking about, fight the oligarchy, I now see it first hand, I mean he’s trying to intimidate me. I won’t be intimidated, but look at how many members [of Congress] who say…I’m just not gonna speak up, I don’t want a lawsuit against me.” 🤦♀️
