@000Dave @laurenrocco Also, it shows up in 3rd and 4th grade because up until that point there are pictures to use to guess and words that they have memorized by sight (sight words) but when text becomes more complex and pictures are gone…they have no idea how to approach a word that they don’t know

@000Dave @laurenrocco To read regardless of how they are taught. The rest need to learn the patterns of the English language (phonics) and the Units of Study did not include that instruction. It is very possible that the way that the OP’s child was taught to read (guess) did not work for them.

@laurenrocco You absolutely can teach phonics at this point. If you want it done at school go to the office and productively talk to the principal, then the superintendent, then the school board. Do some research first, come with possible solutions.

@DrMaryHoward The problem here is the false narrative that SOR is ONLY phonics. I have read and listened to many many sources regarding SOR and almost all of them reference Scarborough’s rope which includes all 5 pillars of reading….NOT only phonics.
