๐ฅ Victory for Rainham! ๐ฅ
After years of smoke, frustration, and tireless campaigning, Havering Council has finally declared the Launders Lane site contaminated.
@Channel4News Look at what's happening in Launders Lane in Rainham. It's a complete disaster, constantly on fire, and yet nobody wants to be held accountable or take care of the issue. People are suffering and being ignored.https://t.co/g8Tqjrxu3v
A massive mountain of illegal waste in Oxfordshire will be cleared, the Environment Agency says.
It says the 'exceptional decision' was made to clear the site because it poses a 'fire risk', adding that it will only take such action in 'truly exceptional circumstances'.
The 150-metre long pile of rubbish provoked outrage and experts say it posed a risk to the environment.
One man who was arrested as part of an investigation into the dumping of waste has since been released pending further investigation.
The declaration opens the door to remediation and, at long last, justice for the people of Rainham.
To every resident who signed petitions, attended meetings, sent letters, and refused to be silenced, this victory belongs to you. The fight isnโt over, but today, we celebrate!
๐ฅ Victory for Rainham! ๐ฅ
After years of smoke, frustration, and tireless campaigning, Havering Council has finally declared the Launders Lane site contaminated.
This is the breakthrough weโve fought for, recognition of what Rainham residents have known all along. The toxic fires that have plagued Rainham are not just a nuisance, they are a public health and environmental disgrace.
While the polluter should always pay, we are encouraged to see that Havering Council finally appear to recognise that they have a duty of care and candour to Rainham residents who have suffered exponentially - both mentally and physically - all summer.
๐ฐ In potentially welcome news, Havering Council has finally conceded the obvious and accepted some responsibility concerning the devastating Launders Lane fires.
Further inaction on Launders Lane is not an option, and it is up to Havering Council to take some responsibility:
* another abatement notice under the statutory nuisance regime - one that isn't inexplicably retracted this time
Havering council intimate that the two routes to action are mutually exclusive, which is not necessarily the case.
๐ If you care about clean air and your familyโs health, share this post, tag Havering Council, and make your voice heard. We will not stop until Rainham breathes freely again.

This is the McLennan Avenue entrance to Spring Farm Park, covered in thick, choking smog. This isnโt early morning mist. This is what Rainham residents are forced to breathe every single day. Families, children, and elderly people walk through this park. ๐งต
This is supposed to be a place for fresh air, exercise, and community!
Where is the Councilโs accountability?
Rainham has been ignored for too long. We refuse to let our community be poisoned in silence. Enough is enough โ we want answers and action NOW!
Let's keep up the momentum: sign and share to help push Havering Council for justice for Rainham children.
They need to designate the land as contaminated.https://t.co/Iee3aHpLSR
Really important piece about #LaundersLane, over which I took my council to court and won.
During another blistering summer, I implore Havering Council to do the right thing and designate this vast illegal landfill as contaminated.

Terrible day for particle and ozone #AirPollution on Wednesday. National #PollutionAlert remains in force until 5pm Thursday. Relief for most on Thursday << Warnings from @MayorofLondon (and rain) may have helped save London from the worst HT @SadiqKhan@metecoban92

At Mayor's Question Time, @MayorofLondon heard the need for #ZanesLaw, & desperate demand to #StopTheFires on #LaundersLane
Smoke fills children's lungs - yet data of repeated summer spikes is disingenuously annualised/diluted
