The third major finding of the study was that there were more genes found attributable to Nigeria than expected (compared to records of the number of enslaved people from Nigeria, which were fewer).

Secondly, the study found there to be less evidence of genetics in America today from Senegal and The Gambia, despite being areas close to major slave routes.

21st century genetics are different and marked by the history of enslaved ancestors- ultimately meaning that the slave trade actually changed the course of genetics in the country- for hundreds of years, up until today. We will be posting more about each shocking finding.
We will share some of the key results from this study by Micheletti et al, which was published last week in the American Journal of Human Generics (AJHG).
