Senior guard Kyla Schaapveld delivered a decisive perimeter performance in Ankeny’s 57–44 victory over Cedar Rapids Washington, providing the type of spacing and shot efficiency that can reshape a postseason game.

Schaapveld finished with 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting, with all five field goals coming from beyond the arc. Her 5-of-8 performance from three-point range represents elite shot conversion in a tournament setting where defensive attention and game pace typically suppress perimeter efficiency. When a shooter connects at that level, the geometry of the floor immediately changes. Defenses must extend their coverage, which stretches help rotations and opens interior driving and rebounding lanes for teammates.

That spacing effect is not always captured fully in a box score. Each made three forces a defensive recalibration. In tournament basketball, those adjustments can cascade across multiple possessions, especially when they occur early or during momentum runs. Schaapveld’s perimeter accuracy provided Ankeny with a reliable scoring valve whenever Cedar Rapids Washington attempted to compress the floor defensively.

Beyond her shooting production, Schaapveld contributed on the glass with four rebounds, including two offensive boards that created extended possessions. Offensive rebounding from a perimeter player often reflects anticipation and awareness—recognizing when long shots produce long rebounds and positioning accordingly. Five made three-pointers equate to 15 points generated on only nine field-goal attempts, producing exceptional scoring yield per possession. In a postseason environment where every possession carries amplified weight, that level of efficiency can shift the strategic balance of a game.

Ankeny’s strong fourth-quarter surge, closing the contest with a 21–7 advantage, reflects how perimeter shooting and spacing can accumulate pressure over time. When defenses are forced to chase shooters, offensive rhythm tends to follow.

Kyla Schaapveld’s performance exemplified that principle: efficient shooting, floor spacing, and timely possession extension—all critical ingredients in tournament success.
