Iowa State Tournament — Player Performance Update
@Hawkettehoops@KylaSchaapveld4
Senior guard Kyla Schaapveld delivered a decisive perimeter performance in Ankeny’s 57–44 victory over Cedar Rapids Washington, providing the type of spacing and shot efficiency that can reshape a postseason game.
Schaapveld finished with 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting, with all five field goals coming from beyond the arc. Her 5-of-8 performance from three-point range represents elite shot conversion in a tournament setting where defensive attention and game pace typically suppress perimeter efficiency. When a shooter connects at that level, the geometry of the floor immediately changes. Defenses must extend their coverage, which stretches help rotations and opens interior driving and rebounding lanes for teammates.
That spacing effect is not always captured fully in a box score. Each made three forces a defensive recalibration. In tournament basketball, those adjustments can cascade across multiple possessions, especially when they occur early or during momentum runs. Schaapveld’s perimeter accuracy provided Ankeny with a reliable scoring valve whenever Cedar Rapids Washington attempted to compress the floor defensively.
Beyond her shooting production, Schaapveld contributed on the glass with four rebounds, including two offensive boards that created extended possessions. Offensive rebounding from a perimeter player often reflects anticipation and awareness—recognizing when long shots produce long rebounds and positioning accordingly. Those extra possessions reinforce the impact of efficient shooting by compounding scoring opportunities.
From an analytical standpoint, Schaapveld’s night illustrates the value of shot specialization executed at high efficiency. Five made three-pointers equate to 15 points generated on only nine field-goal attempts, producing exceptional scoring yield per possession. In a postseason environment where every possession carries amplified weight, that level of efficiency can shift the strategic balance of a game.
Ankeny’s strong fourth-quarter surge, closing the contest with a 21–7 advantage, reflects how perimeter shooting and spacing can accumulate pressure over time. When defenses are forced to chase shooters, offensive rhythm tends to follow.
Kyla Schaapveld’s performance exemplified that principle: efficient shooting, floor spacing, and timely possession extension—all critical ingredients in tournament success.

Girls state basketball: 5-seed Ankeny rallies in the 4th Q to beat CR Washington 57-44. Jayla Williams 18 points, Reagan Baldwin and Kyla Schaapveld each hit 5 threes. Hawkettes to the semis.
On a day when @jbball1022 became the all-time leading scorer for @Hawkettehoops, it was the hot shooting from @ReaganBaldwin31 and @KylaSchaapveld4 that sparked Ankeny past Cedar Rapids Washington in a Class 5A quarterfinal: https://t.co/MptiKFNdsu

-Game high 18 points. Lightning getting down hill and Williams blends in a strong step-back jumper as well
@CreightonWBB commit one of the absolute best pick & punish players in Midwest with ability to generate steals & convert into layups.

@Hawkettehoops@CentralDutchWBB commit was given cushion early in game, and it allowed her to get into a shooting rhythm, finishing the game with 15 points, all via the 3 point line.
Delivered 3 times from the left side of the floor and 2 more from the top. Helped keep Ankeny's offense in game throughout much of the afternoon.

@Hawkettehoops@WaldorfWBB getting an absolute sniper in Baldwin, elite level shooter with deep range & the ability to catch fire from distance.
15 points in win, all from distance, Baldwin is a sniper off the wings and will stretch the floor. Also did a great job helping smaller Ankeny lineup contend with larger Washington front court down low.
Nothing like a 4th quarter eruption, especially in the #iahsbkb 5A State Quarterfinals.
@Hawkettehoops outscored CR Washington, 21-7, in the final frame, en route to a 57-44 upset win.
- @ReaganBaldwin31: 15 PTS (5/10 3PT)
- @jbball1022: 18 PTS & 13 REB (both game highs)
