@jon_stokes What's the point of "winning" the "AI race", if the outcome is the same, i.e. humans disempowered by vastly more intelligent and powerful machines?
@mattparlmer@tyler_m_john lol strawman city, I don’t think anyone is happy for a restriction on deployment without also a restriction on development.
this is obviously about power and once there is power to be grabbed no matter what anyone says on an internet forum, the government will grab that power
I was never important, or close to actual power, but the most striking thing from my time in foreign policy is that there is no secret curtain behind which the kayfabe drops, there is no insider understanding that isn't for normies. It is deeply credulous all the way to the top.
@justalexoki the state only cares for you because you’re instrumentally useful to it, once that’s no longer true there is no incentive to really do anything but get rid of you, this is what the the smarter people in the government know that agi represents
@justalexoki not in the name of safety at all, this is just how power works in an anarchic system, don’t tell me you actually thought they’d give you access to strong agi, literally why would they?
@lumpenspace you are, there is a lead and they will influence things in way you don’t like at all
will a pause happen? yeah probably still not, not the point im making
@AndrewCurran_@allTheYud could derail the investment that underpins the iron that these things ultimately run on, government ain’t gonna make the tax payer foot that bill if debt funding mechanisms collapse. Not saying it’s a full stop but it would be a slow down I think
@signalxsoul@allTheYud I mean how would it actually go any other way? If anyone “has” it, the people with a monopoly on violence are going to be first line
@justjoshinyou13 and I know it’s an imperfect analogy because AI has more upside than even nuclear power, but it also arguably has more risks and the governments main job, first and foremost, is dealing with that risk and mitigation of any threats to sovereignty
not saying this model does per se (this today in particular is probably due to dumber reasons) but you have to recognize the monstrous tradeoff between security, even sovereignty and capability diffusion there’s a massive incentive for govs to lock down the most capable models for themselves. Are we unreliable partners for not handing nuclear bombs to every nation in nato? Of course not. nationalization cometh.
