The WHO technical advisory group on vaccine research met last Friday to review new data on the Ervebo vaccine, the only licensed vaccine against Ebola virus disease.

New data from two animal studies show that Ervebo offers some protection against Bundibugyo virus disease, particularly against dying from the disease.
The studies were done following WHO's call for more research.

Given this new information, and that there are no safety concerns for this vaccine, the group recommends that the Ervebo vaccine be prioritized for a clinical trial in the Democratic Republic of the Congo during the ongoing Bundibugyo virus disease outbreak.

To gather data that can be used for policy decisions as quickly as possible, WHO recommends that it be evaluated in a priority clinical trial using a ring vaccination design, a design which has been used successfully in the past.

WHO is working with partners to start this trial as soon as possible. The trial is a step towards expanding use of the vaccine, if it is shown to protect people from the disease.

Working with communities will be important for acceptance and involvement in the trial.

The advisory group will continue to review new data and evidence when available to adjust their recommendations as needed.

Na @HealfiX story de hoje, trago um caso médico muito emblemático.

Her body was cooled to 60 degrees. Her heart was stopped. The blood was drained out of her brain. Every monitor in the room said she was dead.

Then she woke up and described her own surgery.

Pam Reynolds had an aneurysm at the base of her brain that couldn't be operated on by ordinary means. So Dr. Robert Spetzler stopped her heart, drained her brain, and gave himself 30 minutes to rebuild the artery.

When she recovered, she told him she had watched the whole thing. He told her she couldn't have. She was under surgical drapes. She was brain dead.

So she described his custom-made instruments. The conversations between the doctors, word for word. The problems that came up mid-surgery.

"She described the music they were playing in the operating room while she was brain dead."

Spetzler's own response: "I can't explain it."
