I’ve been told "there’s definitely no asbestos in this building.”
No survey. Just confidence.
I’ve heard it too many times - and seen how often it’s wrong.
In the UK: ~5,000 deaths every year.
Assumptions are still a risk.

A good explanation of how red emergency cords are supposed to be fitted. Note: They must come down to the ground in case someone falls and needs to reach the cord from the ground.
Most workers will not navigate digital change through specialist skills alone. The foundations matter too: digital literacy, critical thinking and social abilities.

Most asbestos deaths today come from exposure decades ago.
That’s the scary part.
What you’re exposed to now might not show up for 20-50 years.
Worth thinking about next time someone says “it’ll be fine.”

If you’re not sure it’s asbestos…
👉 Stop
👉 Don’t disturb it
👉 Get it checked

Years ago, we used to just rip things out and chuck it in a skip.
Different times - but the exposure still counts.
Symptoms can take decades to show.
Know what you’re working with.

Asbestos isn’t just a problem from the past.
If you’re drilling, cutting, stripping out -
you could still come across it today.
Globally, it causes 200,000+ deaths every year.

We talk a lot about legacy risk.
But asbestos is the legacy - still causing ~5,000 deaths a year in the UK.
Decades later, we’re still dealing with decisions made long before us.
Let’s not add to that legacy.

One thing I’ve learned over the years:
Asbestos risk isn’t about what you know—it’s about what you assume.
And assumptions are where things go wrong.
This week is a reminder to keep asking questions.

As H&S professionals, we know the risks.
But awareness isn’t the same as action.
Asbestos still causes the majority of work-related cancer deaths globally.
So the question is - are we still challenging, or just accepting?
