We legislate safe (or unsafe) work hours for kids but feel we can't do the same for school hours. Sad.

There is no doubt starting school later would significantly benefit health & wellbeing of NJ students, especially middle and high schoolers.
Still, whenever a later start time is proposed there is significant pushback from parents

Sleep specialist and clinical hypnotist Jeffrey Rose says the nationwide push to start high schools later would boost students’ medical and behavioral benefits, and may be the “greatest reform you can make for high school education” #startschoollater https://t.co/wrKdRlwbi3
“All of the research from around the world tells us that students in middle & high school shouldn’t start school early & for the life of me, in Baton Rouge, we have students on the corner at 5:30 in the morning waiting on a bus" #startschoollater https://t.co/DiF1gzRSqA
"They have to wake up so early on school days," says this mom and "in our family, my teenagers can't possibly get anywhere near the recommended hours of sleep on a regular basis" #startschoollater https://t.co/9K0XUfzyNu
The alarms on A’Nya Lucas’ phone go off at 5, 5:15, 5:20 and 5:30am so she can get out the door by 6:08. The time between her first alarm and her first period class (7:45am) is nearly 3 hours. She won’t get back home until 6 or 7pm. #startschoollater https://t.co/ttitfh4iCE
@Holden_Culotta This is low-hanging fruit for anyone who cares about teen mental health, safety & well-being. Schools used to start at sane, humane hours that gave students a chance for healthy sleep. Let's make it happen again! #startschoollater#sleepmatters
@Holden_Culotta Yesterday I learned of a school district that starts its bus runs at 4:52 am!
It doesn't matter how early a teen "goes to bed" with hours like that.
But many families are required by law to deprive their children of sleep to send them to school. #startschoollater
@SheepvWolf@Holden_Culotta You'd think so, but experience shows otherwise! When schools start later, kids go to bed at around the same time (LATE!) but sleep more in the morning. Result? More sleep! https://t.co/WtJgbfmhks
@Holden_Culotta@PamMurrayCT It's also just plain false. A myth disproven again and again by the many districts that have found ways to start at reasonable times #startschoollater https://t.co/WtJgbfmhks
