If transport contributes 50% of PM₂.₅, a fully electric fleet could cut city pollution by half. But current policy targets only new registrations, so air quality gains will come gradually as the fleet turns over. Even if no new fossil-fuel vehicles are registered, it could still take 10–15 years for the on-road fleet to become zero-emission. In Delhi, where vehicle sales are growing 7.5% year on year versus the national average of 6.5%, the pace of fleet replacement will determine how quickly PM₂.₅ levels fall.
