I’d say the temptation isn’t to be like God. It’s to supplant God (which “recognizing no higher authority” speaks to). We are all “like God” already bc we are fractals of All That Is experiencing itself. The hubris is in thinking one is the source of creation itself.
I do not think Olah is a bad man. He has acted in good faith, and I have credited him for engaging the Church while much of his industry sneered at the encyclical. But the ask shows how little Silicon Valley understands the Church, or religion at all.
Last fall I wrote that the industry’s original sin is a refusal to recognize any authority greater than itself, a temptation as old as Genesis: to be like God. Ten months later, that temptation is alive inside one of the more thoughtful labs in the business.
In professional settings, I have spoken with the people who work in the religious outreach efforts at the frontier labs (some call them philosophy teams, others describe their work as the philosophical underpinnings of the models), and at times I have come away unimpressed.
Few of them know Catholicism well. In one crude example, a man I met in person at a coffee shop (not a Michelin star restaurant!) who was a key contact for the Catholic community did not know what an encyclical was. He could not pronounce the word, and he kept calling the pope Leo XII.
There is a lot of work to do here. https://t.co/H2zMAGdGHi
Elon will never take this to heart bc he’s not here for the long game. He only does what he does bc he thinks what’s good for humanity is what serves himself first. This article outlines another way that, frankly, could amount to Internet 11.0.
X runs a cognitive feudal order: rank by reaction, titles for cash. AI makes both worthless.
The X-Challenge to @elonmusk: stop selling relationships. Next internet business: help people learn, grow, create, own. Who builds it first? https://t.co/aL2zWN7mDH
Anything this guy is a part of will always fail bc he’s a predator who made stalking in plain sight a business model.
Let’s not encourage the guy even further.
BREAKING: Zuckerberg just described the near-future of computing, and it has nothing to do with screens.
His call: within 5 years, every person on Earth has a personal AI that knows their life, understands their goals, and does the work for them.
Not a chatbot. Not a search box.
An agent that is deeply, intimately embedded in how you live.
When the person building the social layer for 3 billion people says this is where we're going, it's not a prediction.
It's a roadmap.
Is the personal AI agent the most valuable product anyone can build right now?
Vance says “broken” like H1-B can be repaired to work properly. Dude, It IS Working Properly. That’s why it must be scrapped, along with every other foreign worker scheme currently running, including offshoring.
Vice President JD Vance on H1-B visas:
"If you’re going to bring in an accountant making $45,000 a year to replace an accountant who is an American making $60,000 a year, that’s not you using the program to bring in a genius. That’s you destroying American jobs and defrauding the American people... my view is the H1-B program is completely broken."
I make sourdough regularly (and well) but I’m not a pro baker. This rye looks like it was made by someone who’s never made bread before. NYC proves every day it deserves to fall, hard.
After watching this back and forth pretentiousness in the $60 loaf of bread shop in NY, I can conclude we are in the late years of Weimar Germany.
1929 is coming.
@retlaw1016 Nothing to do with right to repair. This is Mercedes fleecing dumb rich folks who think dealership service techs are their outsourced car servants. Mercedes is just making sure the techs look impressively busy for their clientele.
This happened to me in the middle of watching a movie. Netflix dropped it for about 2 yrs. When they brought it back, it showed up in my “Continue watching” list, right where I left off.
@MrTony03222023@NateArdle@ayojoestar What about when streaming services stop carrying something you really want to watch, watch again, or finish a series that you were in the middle of when it suddenly disappeared? All of those have happened to me and I'm sure to others.
@mimi10v3 Powell’s Books is a good Amazon alternative. Primarily used books in great condition but they also get new releases. Historically good svc but contact them to verify if they take any precautions when shipping.
Septembre 1976 - Jarre enregistre Oxygene dans la cuisine de son appartement parisien, sur son premier synthétiseur analogique, un EMS VCS3, qui ressemblait à un standard téléphonique.
Il y a cinquante ans.
Oxygene Part IV | JM Jarre | 1976.
Back in the day, Americans used to use increasing prices as a signal to re-evaluate their purchasing & recalibrate away from crap they didn’t need. Today, Americans see the price inflation of soda & cry in public like a toddler. While still buying the soda.
Vice President Vance on the Trump Administration's H1B visa reforms:
"The H-1B should not exist to replace American workers with low-wage foreigners. It should exist to enrich the American economy."
It’s interesting to note that human posts look like fine crystal Christmas ornaments, GPT & Kimi posts look like carrots/parsnips & Claude, Gemini & DeepSeek posts look like what drs tell you a healthy shit is supposed to look like.
We trained a model to predict AI-written blog posts from structural features - and discovered the shape of slop.
On posts it had never seen, it told AI and human apart with 98% accuracy, getting only 19 of 1,740 wrong.

In the 1950s, progressing thru kindergarten apparently involved assessing whether kids had sufficient motor skills to do piecework to an arbitrary standard, stay out of the way of adults & follow orders. Kinda like working in a factory.
I think this video reveals AI’s sense of humor that goes way beyond the prompt. Dario’s looking suspiciously like Mark Ruffalo & Leisure Suit Larry had a baby here.
