I always wished I could live in the House of Wisdom and spend my life reading and translating books. But in this timeline being a VC is the next best thing.

That's why I have been building Dealdock for the past 4 years. To free myself from all kinds of drudgery work as a VC and increase my time in flow state.

i was a founding engineer at a pre pmf startup so i have much sympathy for said candidates

this is a cringe take - you stand to gain 10000x more than any of your employees. why would they want to work as hard as you?

as founder you have to get that -> do everything to bridge the gap e.g. we give our team the sexy projects and do the cringe boring work

nobody is entitled to the hard work of others, it has to feel worthwhile

It is not nearly as woo-woo as it might seem. It was recommended to me by a neuroscience PhD who said it changed her life, then by another cynical friend who said the same.  

It is one of the most useful books I’ve read. It’s easy to digest, and I suggest one short chapter before bed each night.

Many GPs like to talk about being contrarian. Almost none can stomach the real cost: years of looking wrong and watching everyone around you get (paper)rich on stuff you passed on. Michael is the rare exception, and he has the receipts:

He did the Runway and Wayve seed rounds in 2018, before anyone was talking about generative AI. Both up 100x+ since. He raised a fund in '21 and barely deployed for 2 years while everyone piled into the top. His latest funds sat out most of the AI gold rush for biotech and material science. Most recently, he raised a liquid fund to run the same playbook in public markets

While most VCs compete to win allocations into the best companies in the hottest sectors (i.e. playing momentum games), Compound sidesteps this entirely. Instead, they spend their time trying to predict the future: diving deep on the research across a range of topics, publishing long-form theses, and then backing the founders who either fit their thesis or break it in a smart way
