THE HISTORY THEY DIDN’T TEACH IN OUR SCHOOLS TODAY : The Bombardment of Algiers - how the British Navy freed thousands of Christian slaves

In August 1816, while the British colony at Sydney was just twenty-eight years old, the Royal Navy won one of the most remarkable humanitarian victories of the nineteenth century.

The Bombardment of Algiers was fought not to seize territory or expand the Empire, but to force the Islamic rulers of the Barbary Coast to end the centuries-old enslavement of Christians and free thousands of European captives.

For centuries, the Islamic rulers of Algiers, Tunis and Tripoli had terrorised the Mediterranean through state-sponsored piracy.

Merchant ships were intercepted, their cargoes plundered, and their passengers and crews carried into slavery. Men, women and children from Britain and across Europe were bought and sold in slave markets, forced to labour in quarries, shipyards and households, or held for ransom under brutal conditions.

Entire coastal villages in southern Europe had lived for generations under the constant fear of Barbary slave raiders.

Following the defeat of Napoleon, Britain turned its attention to ending this long-running scourge.

Admiral Lord Exmouth was dispatched with a powerful Royal Navy squadron to demand the immediate release of Christian slaves and the permanent abolition of Christian slavery.

The Dey of Algiers dismissed Britain's demands, believing his heavily fortified harbour and coastal batteries could withstand any attack.

He was gravely mistaken.

On 27 August 1816, an Anglo-Dutch fleet sailed boldly into Algiers Harbour and engaged the city's powerful defences at point-blank range.

For more than nine hours, British sailors endured a relentless bombardment while systematically destroying the Algerian fleet, arsenal, dockyards and coastal batteries. It was one of the fiercest naval engagements of the age of sail.

British ships were repeatedly struck by heavy cannon fire, rigging was shredded, masts splintered, and hundreds of sailors were killed or wounded. Yet the fleet held its position and continued firing until the enemy's resistance collapsed.

The victory came at a heavy price. The British suffered 128 killed and 690 wounded, while many of the fleet's ships were severely damaged.

The Algerian losses were catastrophic. Most of the Dey's navy was destroyed, vast quantities of military stores were obliterated, and much of the harbour lay in ruins.

The following day, Admiral Exmouth sent the Dey a letter that combined magnanimity with unmistakable resolve:

"Sir, for your atrocities at Bona on defenceless Christians, and your unbecoming disregard of the demands I made yesterday in the name of the Prince Regent of England, the fleet under my orders has given you a signal chastisement, by the total destruction of your navy, storehouse, and arsenal, with half your batteries. As England does not war for the destruction of cities, I am unwilling to visit your personal cruelties upon the unoffending inhabitants of the country, and I therefore offer you the same terms of peace which I conveyed to you yesterday in my Sovereign's name. Without the acceptance of these terms, you can have no peace with England."

Exmouth concluded by warning that unless the terms were accepted, the bombardment would resume. Unknown to the Dey, it was a calculated bluff. The British fleet had expended almost all of its ammunition and was in no position to sustain another prolonged engagement. Believing the threat to be genuine, the Dey capitulated.

The terms were a resounding victory. More than 3,000 Christian slaves were immediately released, ransom money previously extorted from European nations was repaid, and the Dey formally undertook to abolish the enslavement of Christians throughout his dominions. It was one of the greatest blows ever struck against the Barbary slave system.

For the young colony of New South Wales, founded only twenty-eight years earlier, this was also a triumph.

Sydney was not some distant outpost but an integral part of the British Empire. News of the victory would have been greeted with pride throughout the Empire, including in the fledgling settlement on the shores of Port Jackson.

It was another reminder that the Royal Navy was more than a shield - it provided the safe guard for the fledging colony NSW to prosper, create wealth and lay the foundation stones of the great Nation of Australia.

Today, the Bombardment of Algiers is rarely remembered. It is absent from our National curriculum, for the British freeing Christian slaves held by Islamic rulers doesn’t fit the politically correct narrative of the radical left.

Yet it stands as one of the defining moments when Britain used its naval supremacy not for conquest or plunder, but to confront piracy, punish tyranny and strike a decisive blow against the enslavement of Christians.

It remains one of the Royal Navy's finest hours and a victory that belonged to the whole British Empire, including the people of colonial New South Wales.

A service called ISBNdb facilitates orders of up to a million books and keeps buyers anonymous. Pre-2022 books are premium because they're free of AI-generated text. A federal judge ruled the practice is fair use because eliminating the original means only one copy exists at a time. Anthropic hired the former head of Google Books partnerships to obtain "all the books in the world."

My Take
This got to me. A bookseller told 404 Media that rare books with almost no surviving copies are being fed into this pipeline. Books that survived wars, fires, and centuries of handling are being shredded so an AI can learn to write a better marketing email.
ISBNdb's website literally says "'AI company destroys two million books' is not a headline that generates sympathy," and they still built an entire business around making it happen quietly. They offer NDAs as a feature. They coach clients to call it "digital preservation."

I've covered AI companies scraping the internet, torrenting libraries, and stealing music. This is worse because it's irreversible. You can re-upload a website. You can reprint a bestseller. You can't replace the last three copies of an 18th-century botanical text once someone shreds them for training data. And the judge said it's legal. So it's going to accelerate.
"We shred rare books and offer NDAs so nobody finds out" is a legitimate business model in 2026. What a timeline.

Over the past few months I have published many posts built entirely from primary government data. AEC filings. ASIC extracts. AusTender contracts. Parliamentary registers. Every figure is verifiable. Every source is named.

Here is what the data shows when you put it all together.

The tobacco industry paid $14 million into Australian politics while fighting plain packaging through a fake retailers group. Both parties took the money. The structure they invented became the template every industry uses today.

One company, Pratt Holdings, paid $3 million to both major parties in a single year. It has done the same thing almost every year since 1998. You get one vote every three years.

DoorDash paid $785,000 to the Liberals in the four months before the federal election while publicly opposing Labor’s gig economy laws. The ratio was 8.5 to 1.

The gambling industry paid Labor $899,343 while the gambling advertising ban was under active consideration. They paid the Liberals $819,480 in the same period.

The ban was dropped.

Labor Holdings Pty Ltd has received $322 million since 1998. No donors named. The Liberal equivalent, the Cormack Foundation, has given $9.4 million to the Victorian division. Same architecture.

Different colour.

The Greenfields Foundation lent the Liberal Party $4.25 million. The party has been repaying it for 23 years. The original source of the Foundation’s capital is not visible in any public document.

Vapold Pty Ltd, a 50-year-old Liberal investment vehicle run by the party’s most powerful figures, reported $37.6 million in receipts in a single Victorian election year. The source is not disclosed. The shares are held not beneficially.

The beneficial owner is unknown.

The taxpayer funds all four party think tanks simultaneously through the Department of Finance. $5.5 million since 2018.

You paid for the policy that all four parties are selling you.

The ACTU received $20.7 million from government agencies across the dataset while spending $34.3 million on electoral campaigns. The unions that fund Labor have donated $18.4 million directly to the party.

The loop runs continuously.

A Chinese billionaire whose residency was later cancelled by ASIO on foreign interference grounds donated $5.38 million to both parties over nine years.

Neither party has returned the money.

And Advance Australia — the right’s parallel campaign machine — received $34 million in three years with zero named donors in the required disclosure.

None of it is illegal.

That is the whole point.

The system is not broken. It is working exactly as the people who designed it intended. The disclosure laws have thresholds low enough to hide what matters. The associated entity structures obscure the origin of capital. The think tank grants flow regardless of who governs. The union loop runs automatically. The front groups run the campaigns that the companies cannot run directly.

Every single one of these findings is in a public register. I did not need a whistleblower. I did not need a leak. I needed a spreadsheet and the willingness to read what the government has already published.

The question is not whether this is happening. The data proves it is. The question is whether enough Australians are angry enough to demand it stops.

None of it is illegal. That’s the problem.

#BREAKING An Iranian national who drugged and raped a 13 year old girl in her bedroom will not be deported or jailed - and will keep receiving taxpayer funded NDIS support while living freely in the community.

Arash Farzad spiked a mother and her daughter with benzodiazepines during a fake job interview, then raped the 13 year
old while threatening to cut her throat.

He told psychiatrists he had a sexual interest in girls of 13 because “Ozzy Osbourne was with a 13 year old” and he “wanted to try it out.”

The NSW Supreme Court just renewed his supervision order - but removed his ankle bracelet because it “identified him as a pedophile” and got him abuse.

They even cleared him to attend “NDIS barbecues.”

Farzad complained that his NDIS provider sent him only male support workers and expressed a desire for female support workers.

He now gets female support workers to “wash him” and “shampoo his hair.”

He has called them “wife material,” commented on women’s bodies in public, and said “I like them young.”

Taxpayers are funding this.

A convicted child rapist remains in the community on the NDIS.

How is this acceptable?
