Hideo Shimizu, a former teenage recruit of Japan’s notorious Unit 731, has broken decades of military-ordered silence to publicly confess to the horrific biological and chemical warfare atrocities he witnessed during World War II.
Shimizu was sent to the Unit 731 headquarters in Harbin, Japanese-occupied Manchuria, at just 14 years old as a member of the Youth Corps. He spent roughly four to six months there before fleeing on August 14, 1945, as Japanese forces retreated. Assigned to an education department laboratory to study pathogens, Shimizu was taken to a specimen room inside the headquarters. He recalls seeing human heads, limbs, and internal organs floating in formalin, including a horrific specimen of a pregnant female body with an exposed fetus. Doctors and staff referred to human experimentation subjects as maruta (logs). While Shimizu notes he did not see the maruta alive, he was ordered to collect their bones and put them in bags after they were killed and their bodies incinerated. Upon arrival, he was forced to memorize a strict military oath: "Never live to experience shame as a prisoner", and was ordered to keep everything he saw entirely secret.
For over 70 years, Shimizu kept his past a secret, fighting persistent nightmares. However, in 2016, looking at his own great-grandchildren, he decided he had to tell the truth to protect future generations from the mistakes of war. In August 2024, Shimizu traveled to Harbin, China—his first time returning in 79 years. He publicly apologized, prayed for the deceased, and urged the Japanese government to squarely face its wartime history rather than trying to erase it.

Living in China is just so exhausting. Every morning, you wake up stressed about how everything is so convenient you are losing basic life skills. You don't even need a wallet anymore. Even the old lady selling fresh lotus seedpods on the street corner forces you to scan a QR code. They’ve completely robbed us of the simple joy of counting paper money. And if you get hungry in the middle of the night? You can get piping hot food delivered in minutes. Or you can just wander the streets alone at 3 am completely off guard, totally missing out on that adrenaline rush of being cornered by "gun freedom." It’s just so painfully boring.
The insane speed of economic and infrastructure growth here is another massive headache. Bullet trains spread across the country like wildfire in just a few years, and cities change so fast you’re constantly forced to adapt. It’s nothing like the "authentic" vibe of other countries, where cracked, decades-old roads give you a real sense of history. Don't even get us started on the lack of "culture." There are no open-air drug users puffing away or relieving themselves all over the streets to enrich the local culture. No skilled pickpockets to help you "declutter" your wallet. Not even a single homeless person in the subway. Life has zero drama.
But the absolute worst part is the politics. We don't get those entertaining presidential election drama shows. No billionaires and actors fighting on stage like stand-up comedians. We never get the chance to use a sacred ballot to elect a talk-show host who only feeds people empty promises. We seriously lack that democratic entertainment value.
Living every single day in this stable, safe, tech-convenient bubble, we have practically forgotten how to survive in a chaotic, dangerous world. Honestly, how do people live like this? 😏😏😏#China #chinamaxxing #Chinese
When you start a chess game, you have 20 moves available (16 for pawn and 2 for one knight). After completing the first movement you have more than 40 different possibilities. And 8900 in the third and 197740 in the fourth. In the 40s there will be 10 puissance 40 possibilities. Number corresponds to the number of atoms in the universe. This is what make chess more magical.
Tem gente lavando dinheiro no game Counter-Strike (CS2).
Usam skins.
The hype around Orcas irritates me because Orcas are just dolphins that hit puberty, joined a gang, and started cosplaying as apex predators. A 6-ton tuxedo disappointment. They harvest liver like it’s profound, organ trafficking piece of shits. We've been apex since their ancestors looked like oversized penguins. They travel in pods because they can't sit with their own thoughts. We swim solo, while they need twenty cousins to bully a seal. They attack boats now, unemployment arc. People scream when we arrive, but they say “awwwnn” when they do. Their dorsal fin looks stepped on, while ours is a warning. We survived five extinctions while they survive on PR.
- PV
- n
- i
- PMT
- FV
Sabendo quatro, a quinta você calcula.
No matter where you stand on Ukraine, you'd have to recognize this is extremely problematic.
Not even 3 months ago this guy was Ukraine's Minister of Defence, meaning in charge of weapons procurement, including from Palantir - the company whose CEO is now the lead investor in his new private venture.
That alone should raise eyebrows, and not in a small way...
But also think about it from a European taxpayer's standpoint.
EU taxpayers have given literally hundreds of billions to Ukraine's war effort, much of it spent buying American defense technology - including from Palantir.
And now the expertise that spending generated is being privatized by those same Americans, and will likely be sold back to Europeans as a product.
There is a common talking point in Europe that goes "sure we're spending an eyewatering amount of money to support Ukraine but it's also an investment in European strategic autonomy - Ukraine's battlefield innovations will feed Europe's future defense capacity."
I'm not making it up, that's a real argument made by serious people, for instance the German Council on Foreign Relations (https://t.co/cPts72NyMl): "The defense-industrial integration of Ukrainian innovation with European production and funding capacity bears huge potential for Europe’s collective security. Increased cooperation would give the EU and Ukraine greater autonomy from the US."
This deal illustrates perfectly just how wrong that argument is turning out to be. The first major privatization of Ukraine's defense expertise is... an American-owned startup.
Lastly there is the Palantir angle, a company so problematic that many, if not most, major European countries - such as France, the Netherlands, Switzerland and even Germany - are actively cutting ties with it, citing threats to data sovereignty and national security.
And yet somehow the man who ran Ukraine's defense with Europe's money - the single most expensive investment Europe made in several generations - is delivering the fruits of that investment to Palantir's CEO in a private deal.
Make it make sense 🤷
So, long story short, this is yet another chapter in what is becoming Europe's defining story: being the incompetent sucker in the room.
every Russian dinner party has at least one PhD physicist (who against his will works as a programmer), one mathematician (who has a similar fate) and one person trained in music theory or philology(no job but has money somehow)—usually there's more—and they reenact this video.
