“Did you see the new poll? What about Hispanic voters in rural Pennsylvania? Who’s going to win??”
Getting bombarded with questions like this. Here’s my answer: There is no crystal ball or oracle poll. Anything can happen. That being said, my unscientific American gut feeling says: Harris will win.
Why? Momentum. We haven’t seen the Democratic base this fired up since 2008. In 2016 people were not enthused by Clinton, to put it mildly, and Trump was, for all his douchebaggery, a trailblazer and underdog. He had momentum on his side. In 2020, Dems were decidedly unexcited about candidate Biden and Trump had incumbency on his side. But after four years of his toxic chaos, many moderates who gave Trump a chance in 2016 dropped him in 2020. It’s unlikely that large numbers of moderate and conservative, non-MAGA voters who dumped Trump four years ago will go back to him now. Yes, the MAGA base are loud and proud, but they weren’t enough to decide the election in 2020 and haven’t grown enough to do it in 2024.
Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of regular Americans are volunteering and millions are donating to #HarrisWalz2024 at record-breaking levels. The self-organizing, community mobilizing, and sheer energy reminds me of what we saw in 2008. It’s hard to explain this kind of American grassroots election organizing to non-Americans unfamiliar with it: imagine regular folks of all ages and walks of life, in small towns and big cities alike, going around knocking on doors, registering people to vote, chatting with them about political issues. On Election Day, they coordinate phone banks, physically drive people to the polls, bring drinks and snacks and music for voters waiting in long lines, give legal advice on voting rights where needed, etc. The scale of these “get out the vote” operations make a difference in tight districts, where the margin of victory can be just thousands or even hundreds of votes.
That being said: Unpollable misogyny hurt Clinton in 2016 and will no doubt hit Harris too. The question is, to what extent? Enough to compensate for the lack of energized moderate Republican voters or to detract from three generations of highly motivated women voters turning out? I doubt it.

This isn’t a prediction, just a gut feeling. One thing is certain, however: if Trump loses, he will try to overturn the result. Americans for Harris will need to vote in droves, and then defend the result through a storm of lies and intimidation through to Inauguration Day. Just remember: that’s a small price to pay to protect the democracy and civil rights past generations died fighting for.
